Following Punch, director Lee Han adapts another Kim Ryeo Ryeong novel for the silver screen, this time tackling the difficult topics of suicide and school bullying. Set in the aftermath of a teenage girl's sudden suicide, the critically acclaimed Thread of Lies reveals through flashbacks the experiences and incidents that built up to her death. Exploring the sensitive dynamics of middle school classrooms and adolescent friendships, the film presents a realistic, nuanced study on bullying that avoids casting blanket judgment but rather addresses the cruel and complex relationship between the victims and perpetrators of bullying. Appearing in her first film in over 20 years, Kim Hee Ae (Secret Love Affair) plays the mother struggling to keep things together after unspeakable loss. Sung Dong Il and Punch's Yoo Ah In also appear in supporting roles. The greatest spotlight, however, goes to the superb young female cast of Ko Ah Sung (Snowpiercer) and top teen actresses Kim Yoo Jung (Commitment) and Kim Hyang Gi (A Werewolf Boy).

14-year-old schoolgirl Cheon Ji (Kim Hyang Gi) takes her own life one day without leaving a suicide note. Her widowed mother (Kim Hee Ae) and older sister Man Ji (Ko Ah Sung) are left reeling from the grief and shock. They never saw the warning signs. Seeking answers, Man Ji begins to approach Cheon Ji's classmates and gradually learns about her sister's peer circle and the class queen bee, Hwa Yeon (Kim Yoo Jung), who befriended then bullied her.

After Cheon-ji (Hyang-ki Kim) commits suicide over school bullying her sister Man-ji (Ah-seong Ko) commits to sleuthing out from Cheon-ji’s school colleagues the truth of why her younger sister decided to kill herself. What Man-ji discovers is not hard knocks bullying but more a sensitive mockery and clannish alienation towards Cheon-ji’s compliant but subdued nature. Cheon-ji’s withdrawn and increasing depression relating to subtle and brisk control from Cheon-ji’s ‘only friend’ Hwa-yeon (Yoo-jeong Kim) who uses systematic methods of keeping Cheon-ji’s friendship a kindly pretence, cutting smiles and back talking lies amidst an atmosphere of congeniality that makes Cheon-ji a mere toy for emotional play. But Cheon-ji is no fool and hates the gathered pretences of her class mates and the exchanging of birthday presents for Hwa-yeon’s approved friendship club. Mixed with Cheon-ji’s subdued nature and Hwa-yeon’s influencing derision, activates the common social rift with Cheon-ji and other girls – group alienating torment. But one similar girl Mi-ra (Yeon-mi Yoo) befriends Cheon-ji, but when Mi-ra discovers her father is loathed by Cheon-ji’s mother (continually pestering her at her food store job) Mi-ra turns furious with a bemused Cheon-ji.

But Man-ji, persisting at her Inspector Columbo quest for truth, agonizes over her ignorance of not understanding the subtle worried concerns her sister had confided. Before Man-ji couldn’t understand Cheon-ji’s moody silences and why her sister requested from their mother Hyeon-sook (Hee-ae Kim) for a personal MP3 player. Hyeon-sook distraught by her daughters loss, tries to comprehend also the ‘whys’ and horrible reasons for her daughter’s suicide, decides to move with Man-ji to another apartment. At their new apt both meet long haired rocker man neighbour Sang-park (Ah-in Yoo) who assists help in getting rid of some large rats in their water closet causing Sang-park to run out of the apartment in terror at their large size. Sang-park though was a close confident to Cheon-ji and spoke about things close to her soul that Man-ji had never been able to do. But this news of confidence is first heard from Hwa-yeon who needful of twisting information around relates Cheon-ji and Sang-park’s talks to Man-ji as suspicious. But when knitting balls with personal notes are found, Man-ji, Mi-ra, Hwa-yeon and Hyeon-sook learn not just Cheon-ji’s dire feelings before her suicide, but also unresolved truths about themselves.

 Into the jungle of multi-social behaviour Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
It’s not about one character ‘bullied’ in ‘Elegant Lies’, but a collective of young girls each suffering facets of emotional insecurity relating to their individual and demanding worlds. Cheon-ji is perceived by her death as the most central victim to outside social pressure, that other girls at her school class deemed Cheon-ji unimportant. But mostly its harmless mockery, reflective of mutual insecurities bouncing off Hwa-yeon and other’s emotional frictions in the jungle world of forging true friendships away from painful home life. In Cheon-ji’s experience the type of friendship where material gift sharing initiations have to prove such friendships. It’s not physical abuse or ‘give me your dinner money’ bullying (well..‘give me your pressy’, maybe), but subtle ‘mate’ control, back talking and low key ridicule flamed from personal despondencies due to family discordance and the need for happiness. The need to be free. Cheon-ji is overly subdued, and asks her mother for an MP3 player so to swap as a birthday pressy pact with Hwa-yeon, but Cheon-ji disapproving the pretence then gets moderately and continually ignored by Hwa-yeon and her class.

Hwa-yeon wishes away from her parent’s fast food service home into something more meaningful (parallel to Young Sook in SK movie ‘Hot Young Bloods’). In essence she’s an extrovert ‘trickster’ and mirror to Cheon-ji’s subdued honesty but both seek mutual happiness. Strong and emotionally fragile Man-ji is like both, regretful that she never forged a solid sister ship with Cheon-ji and strong willed like Hwa-yeon. Cheon-ji before she died had put little notes in bundles of wool meant for the others to read and understand themselves. In a way Cheon-ji is like a depressed Buddha wise child who just couldn’t stand the lack of true friendship. A subdued wise flower underrated a little more than anyone else but subject to the force of troubled weakness. Her final choice was her own commitment to weakness and suggestion that everyone outside Cheon-ji’s world was a bad deal. Everyone outside Cheon-ji’s world thought that everyone else’s world was a better deal than theirs. Things took all too personally (‘like water off a ducks back’ is the safe way...Toltec).

‘Elegant Lies’ is highly recommend it compacts much human situations to the reasons surrounding Cheon-ji’s suicide and of institutional depression via emotional ‘bullying’. It can be humorous, too, like with Sang-park’s slow motion bits. DVD is region ALL
