Proving that its not only Hollywood that can produce big budget, topically themed disaster epics is the Korean Haeundae which depicts the country being struck by an improbably large tsunami while an ensemble cast of famous faces struggle to keep their heads above water. The film was directed by popular helmer Yoon Je Kyun, who had previously been responsible for a number of box office hits, including the comedies Sex is Zero and My Boss, My Hero. Here, he again displays a real talent for commercial popcorn cinema, as the film proved to be a massive hit at the domestic box office, being only the fifth to achieve a benchmark ten million admissions, putting it in the illustrious company of The Host, Taegukgi: The Brotherhood of War, King and The Clown and Silmido. Boasting some impressive special effects and awesome set pieces, the film also performed well internationally, having been released around the world under a variety of different titles.
The film mainly takes place around the titular beach area of the southern port city Busan, where an honest fisherman called Man Sik (Sol Kyung Gu, Public Enemy) bashfully hides his feelings from restaurant worker Yeon Hee (Ha Ji Won, Closer to Heaven) while harbouring a wholly unsurprising secret about her father's drowning some years back. Meanwhile, his equally honest, though somewhat dim lifeguard brother Hyung Sik (Lee Min Ki, A Million) attempts to court a possibly untrustworthy big city girl (Kang Hye Won), whose violent ex-boyfriend isn't too happy about the situation. Needless to say, a geologist (played by acclaimed actor Park Joong Hoon, Nowhere to Hide) works out that the killer tsunami is on its way, and heads to Haeundae to try and rescue his ex-wife Yu Jin (Uhm Jung Hwa, recently in Insadong Scandal) and young daughter (Kim Yu Jung). As is always the case, no one listens to the quite obviously sensible man, and the authorities steadfastly refuse an evacuation, conveniently leaving most of the cast in harms way when the special effects are unleashed. Although its easy to be flippant about the plot of Haeundae which, as should be glaringly obvious from the above synopsis, follows the Hollywood disaster formula to the letter, it does make a genuine effort to make the viewer care about its sprawling cast of characters and their various relationships and struggles. Director Yoon certainly does have the common touch, and while the film never really manages to transcend basic, by the dots melodrama, it still engages beyond the expected level of placing bets on who is going to die first, or in the most satisfying fashion. Certainly, the film is no worse an offender in this arena than other efforts from around the globe, and it does at least show more of a sense of humanity than the utterly lifeless recent US blockbuster 2012. As such, the film engages throughout, and even the first hour or so before the fury of nature is felt is reasonably entertaining, if quite often in an unintentionally amusing fashion. The cast are generally likeable enough, and whilst the script is resolutely middle of the road, all emote, cry and fight for their lives as required, with only Park Joong Hoon looking vaguely embarrassed at times. Obviously, the main reason for watching is the action, which once the tsunami strikes do get suitably exciting as the film basically becomes a non-stop barrage of special effects, most of which are of a very high standard and are some of the best seen outside Hollywood. Yoon's investment in character sort of pays off, whether the viewer actually cares for the cast or simply laughs cruelly as they meet their fates, and he earns a few extra points for declaring open season, with even some of the traditional survivor types hurtling towards watery graves. Almost all of the set pieces are well handled and the film achieves the all-important open mouthed wow factor as the city is destroyed, without ever becoming too cartoonish or unbelievable. Without wishing to suggest any sense of realism, the film is more grounded than others in the disaster genre, and as a result enjoys more of an impact when everything finally goes to hell. As such, Haeundae is not only a credible Korean genre entry, but also one of the better and most entertaining recent examples of the form from anywhere. Although melodramatic and corny, it does show a creditable amount of heart, enough so for its characters not to grate, and the effects are spectacular enough to please all fans of mass destruction. by James Mudge - BeyondHollywood.com |

"Haeundae" definitely has the 'wow' factor
"Haeundae" follows the formula perfected by Irwin Allen in 1970s films like "The Poseidon Adventure" and "Towering Inferno": Round up a gaggle of big-name stars, cast them in a variety of intertwining prototypical roles, season freely with comedy and romance, throw in a major disaster, then cook until well done. It is a sturdy formula and, with today's CGI special effects, it can produce thrilling results -- and does so in this Korean blockbuster.
At the center of the film are struggling Yeon Hee (Ha Ji Won), whose father died in a terrible accident on a fishing boat. Now Yeon Hee scrapes a living by fishing and selling her catch. Man Sik (Sol Kyung Gu), a roughhewn fisherman, loves Yeon Hee and tries to look out for her, but, due to a dark secret, he cannot reveal his love. Man Sik's brother Hyung Sik (Lee Min Ki) is a hunky lifeguard smitten by a snooty college girl (Kang Hye Won), but he wonders if she is only toying with his affections. Uhm Jung Hwa plays a single mom and professional woman coordinating a major international conference; when geologist Kim Hee ((Park Joong Hoon), who fathered her child, intervenes in her life, she recoils at the complications. Kim Hee has been monitoring a series of undersea quakes that seem to be migrating in the direction. But no one will listen to Kim Hee when he seeks to have people evacuate Haeundae. Fortunately, most of these stories are interesting enough to yield some human interest, comedy, romance, and drama while we await the inevitable catastrophe. We get just enough story to care about the fate that will befall these characters. But best of all, the film's special effects truly are special. I'll bet that it was absolutely breathtaking to see this movie in a movie theatre; even when seen on my TV, it made me gasp, then gasp again. While it overextends the pathos of its big moments, there is no denying that "Haeundae" is a very entertaining movie. |

Hooray for Haeundae!
I bought this before even seeing it, knowing that I would like it after watching the preview that gave me goosebumps and almost had me crying. The movie was everything I expected it to be. It was funny, touching and thrilling. The "disaster" scenes were impressive and entertaining. If you liked Independence Day, The Day After Tomorrow or other movies like that, but felt that there was some STORY missing - this is a great movie. The extra disc is a great added bonus. |

Superb
I don't know where to begin.... First of all, it was an amazing movie. I loved it! Absolutely loved it from comic and serious beginning to a sad ending. Characterization was great too. The director really did a fine job with choosing the right actors that suited each of the characters. The setting was like a roller coaster. From very beginning, it was really amusing to see the actual "Haeundae" beach with chicks to foreign men and women to incredible buildings. Then it turned to a serious mood, then funny, then sad, then funny again. I mean it was just one of those movies where you cry so hard then suddenly start laughing, causing more tears to come out BECAUSE your laughing and crying at the same time. other than that IT'S A MUST SEE MOVIE. i give it 9.5 out of 10 ! IT'S SO FUNNY IF YOU GET THE JOKES. BUT HOPEFULLY THE SUBS ARE UNDERSTANDABLE. IM FLUENT IN KOREAN AND I ALSO WATCHED THIS LAST SUMMER WHEN I WAS IN KOREA. |
