One of the all-time greats Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
With "Tokyo Story", director Ozu Yasujiro employs the simplest of stories to create one of the greatest films of all time. Elderly couple Shukichi (Chishu Ryu) and Tomi Hirayama (Higashiyama Chieko) journey from their remote hometown to Tokyo to visit their adult offspring, the doctor Koichi (Yamamura So) and the beauty parlor owner Shige (Sugimura Haruko). Koichi and Shige, however, are caught up in the busy-ness of their daily lives and so fail to offer much time at all to spend with their loving parents. Only their childless daughter-in-law Noriko (Hara Setsuko), whose husband died eight years earlier in the final year of the second world war, takes the time from her work and personal life to welcome the old couple.

Koichi and Shige, on the other hand, rather than embracing the old folks, dispatch them to a hot springs spa characterized by loud music, drinking, and all-night mahjong games. Shukichi and Tomi take the hint and decide that it is time to head home. On the journey home, Tomi falls seriously ill. Ironically, with Tomi in a coma from which she will not awake, her adult children now make the time to return to their hometown to grieve the loss of the mother whom days earlier they ignored.

The film, while developing timeless themes, is anchored in the Japan of 1953, in which the nation was struggling to get off its back after the devastation of World War 2. Ozu brings his distinctive visual style to the film, using his characteristic tatami-mat camera angles, having his characters speak directly into the camera, and employing connecting shots featuring trains and smokestacks. "Tokyo Story" boasts several notable performances, particularly Chishu Ryu convincingly playing a man a good 20 years older than Chishu's actual age, Hara Setsuko particularly brilliant in a late scene in which she confesses her conflicting emotions to her father-in-law, and Sugimura Haruko as the unfailingly cheap and calculating hairdresser. Truly, a cinematic classic.
