YesAsia Editorial Description
The winning couple of Chow Yun Fat and Jacklyn Wu work onscreen magic in Treasure Hunt, a hit action-comedy directed by veteran comedy director Jeff Lau (Chinese Odyssey 2002). Chow Yun Fat is Jeffery Ching, an American CIA agent dispatched to China to steal a national treasure, though its actual appearance and description are unknown to him. Jeff hides out at the Shaolin Temple, where he meets the charming, winsome Mei (Jacklyn Wu), a super-powered ESP misfit who can pass objects through solid surfaces, spur the growth of flowers on any surface, and even fly! Mei and Jeff begin an innocent, tender romance, and Jeff becomes accustomed to the strict, yet enjoyable lives of the Shaolin monks (led by Shaw Brothers veteran Gordon Lau Ka Fai). But various factions want Mei for themselves, and are willing to do almost anything to possess her. Can Jeff save her? Chow Yun Fat brings his unparalleled charisma to Treasure Hunt, a delightful mixture of comedy, action and romance!

A sweet romance buried within a chaotic actioner
A sweet romance buried within a chaotic actioner
Every once in a while, you run into an old Hong Kong movie that makes you wonder: What in the world were they thinking? That, in a nutshell, is 'Treasure Hunt'.
Chow Yun Fat plays Chang Ching, an American CIA agent. After he shoots a ridiculous number of bullets into a never-identifed bunch of bad guys for who-knows-what reason, he is dispatched to China where he is to fetch a 'national treasure'. An American national treasure? A Chinese national treasure? Never mind; it's not important. The treasure, it turns out, is hidden within Shaolin Temple, which allows Gordon Liu his umpteenth opportunity to play a Shaolin monk, a role he can (and probably does) play in his sleep. At the temple, the movie forgets the plot for a while, during which Chang Ching and Mei (Jacklyn Wu) meet and instantly fall deeply in love. Mei has been stashed at Shaolin while she undergoes studies of her astonishing paranormal abilities (and it seems that there is nothing this gal can't do). Chang Ching also uses his time at Shaolin to freshen up how the temple is run. He gives a pudgy child monk a video game, teaches the monks to play baseball in the snow (and somehow they suddenly all acquire baseball bats, mitts and uniforms), and feeds them sushi, french fries, and Coca-Cola. Trust me; I'm not making this up. After all the fun and games, we get a whole lot more violence. Then we have to deal with the Chang Ching-Mei romance: Will events larger than themselves keep them apart? And we close with a classic Teresa Teng song. All the ticket-buyers (and there were lots of them!) go home happy; everyone got a little of what they like. The best part of 'Treasure Hunt' is the romantic angle; Chow Yun Fat and Jacklyn Wu have great chemistry together. The romance works particularly well when it mixes in the fantasy element of Mei's boundless paranormal abiities. Beyond that, the film's spy story is underdeveloped, over-fueled with violence, and never makes much sense. (Query: Can you imagine a Hong Kong movie being made today in which the hero is an American CIA agent?) |

What a Treasure!
I came across this dvd by accident in the video shop and boy am I glad I watched it. What a gem Chow Yun Fatt was taking on the role of some USA secret agent sent to China to 'retrieve a national treasure'. It was never mentioned what this treasure is, so the plot thickens after he arrived in Beijing (but not before he was given a crash course on 'putonghua', aka mandarin). But those of us who understand the language can recognise cantonese being 'stretched' into mandarin. Very funny.
Imagine this : safe-house (Shaolin Temple), ex-monk (now taxi driver), Abbott Gordon Liu was given a couple of chances to show that he still got what it takes with the pole. I love his banter with Chow. You can kill it with a feather!! But another treasure comes in the form of the little boy, savour the garden scene where Jacklyn had flowers blooming in the middle of winter and him explaining to Chow how everyone at the temple are being kept up=to=date with current affairs/general knowledge. Hilarious!! . Jacklyn Wu was the perfect choice for her role as she evoked that sense of innocence and discovering her first love. Music by Yanni was dreamy for the flight scene and I'm glad that they chose Teresa Teng's "The Moon Represent My Heart" (original and still the best). A light-hearted comedy/thriller/love story mixed in one. We can still believe in Prince Charming. But above all, a movie filmed totally in winter, what beautiful scenery. |
