YesAsia Editorial Description

During the emergence of Taiwan New Cinema, the state-run Central Motion Pictures played a significant role in not only fostering directors of the movement, but the development of Taiwanese cinema in general. Under its new management, the revamped Central Pictures Corporation has digitally remastered six classic films from the 80s and the 90s, producing brand-new digital prints that guarantee to overcome the test of time. After Dust in the Wind, four more of these films are arriving in high-definition on Blu-ray for fans to see these films the best way they have ever looked before.

Writer-director Chen Yu Xun's debut film is lighter than the works of other acclaimed Taiwanese directors at the time, but that doesn't diminish its significance. High school-bound Qiang unwittingly gets himself involved in the kidnapping of another young boy. When the head kidnapper dies, the remaining kidnapper turns the incident into a family affair in the process of figuring out what to do. What started as a heinous crime suddenly becomes a group effort to help Qiang get into high school.

This edition includes the film on both Blu-ray and DVD. The bonus DVD also includes director interview and making of.

Beware (Compact disc bronzing) Customer Review Rated Bad 0 - 0 out of 10
Beware before purchasing this one, i bought from here last year and only just got around to attempt to watch the bluray disc and it does not read on any device, this is a disc rot issue on this release so please beware.

Compact disc bronzing, or CD bronzing, is a specific variant of disc rot, a type of corrosion that affects the reflective layer of CDs and renders them unreadable over time.

Affected discs show an uneven brownish discoloring that usually starts at the edge of the disc and slowly works its way toward the center. The top or label layer is affected before the bottom layer. The disc becomes progressively darker over time; tracks at the end of the disc (near the outer edge) show an increasing number of disc-read errors before becoming unplayable.

Funny film from promising Taiwanese director Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
Having seen quite a few Taiwanese movies, I was interested in seeing how the films of the director Chen Yuxun compared to those of Tsai Mingliang or Hou Xiaoxian. ‘Tropical Fish’ compares rather favorably. It is much lighter than the works of his elders, and is very funny in places, though in no way a shallow, predictable potboiler. The plot deals with a mediocre student about to face national exams, who is caught up in a kidnapping. The impending exams loom large as the story progresses in a way that is both humorous and perhaps also critical of how these tests are of such paramount importance in determining education and career possibilities. There also seems to be some contrasting of Mandarin speakers and Taiwanese speakers which follows class distinctions quite closely. Though dependent upon the Chinese subtitles, I quite enjoyed hearing Taiwanese spoken in such an earthy and piquant style. The plot moves forward in a controlled manner, avoiding predictability, and (with a few musical interludes) towards a quite satisfying conclusion. I really enjoyed this one, and am looking forward to seeing the director’s next film, Love Go Go.
