YesAsia Editorial Description
Based on a popular Japanese manga by Sato Shuho, Umizaru is an inspirational adventure film from the creators of Bayside Shakedown: The Movie. Starring Ito Hideaki (Onmyoji and Onmyoji 2), the film details the trials and tribulations of a group of young men who dream of becoming elite sea and rescue divers. The group must endure a grueling training regimen, and form both fierce and friendly rivalries. Tough times and tragedies await them, but through it all, the group forges unbreakable bonds of camaraderie.
Senzaki Daisuke (Ito Hideaki) enters the Coast Guard Academy to try to become an elite sea and rescue diver. The head training officer orders Daisuke and his incompetent classmate Kudo to be partners - an immediate burden to the more-experienced Daisuke, who already has a divemaster license. Still, Daisuke sticks close to Kudo, and together they begin to challenge their training officer's tough demands and even tougher training drills. Then one day, an unexpected accident takes the life of Kudo...
Umizaru 2: Test of Trust
Hailed as the Japanese answer to America's Top Gun, the Coast Guard drama Umizaru was the box office sensation of 2004 and even spawned a follow-up television series, Umizaru Evolution. The eagerly anticipated sequel Limit of Love: Umizaru built on the success of earlier entries in the series and went on to become a smash hit in Japan, easily eclipsing the box office take of the previous film.
Known as Umizaru 2: Test of Trust in some foreign markets, this winning sequel once again centers on the exploits of Senzaki Daisuke (Ito Hideaki), a young recruit who survived the Japanese Coast Guard's grueling diver training program in the first movie. Now engaged to Kanna (Kato Ai, reprising her role from both the original Umizaru and the TV spin-off), Senzaki is experiencing a bad case of cold feet due to some personal trauma that he just can't seem to get past.
But all that emotional baggage comes to a head when he learns about a terrible accident involving a ship. It seems that a fire has broken out onboard the Clover, a gigantic ferry carrying 620 people and close to two hundred vehicles - all with highly explosive potential. Even worse, Kanna is on that ship! With all hell breaking loose, the task of rescuing the passengers and averting disaster is laid upon the Umizaru crew! But will they - and Senzaki himself - have what it takes to save the day? Find out in the blockbuster sequel that surpasses the original, Limit of Love: Umizaru!
Umizaru 3: The Last Message
A modest box office hit in 2004, the comic-based drama Umizaru found a second life as a television drama a year later. Thanks to the television drama's popularity, the series' second feature film Limit of Love Umizaru (a.k.a. Umizaru 2: Test of Trust) became the highest-grossing live-action film of 2006. Four years later, the series - which highlights the courage and hard work of rescue divers - delivers its final and biggest chapter with The Last Message. The series' original cast and crew - stars Ito Hideaki, Kato Ai, Sato Ryuta, plus director Hasumi Eiichiro and scriptwriter Yasushi Fukada - all return to give the hugely successful series a memorable farewell to its fans. As one of the first Japanese films to be converted to 3D theatrical exhibition, The Last Message once again attracted enough audiences to become the highest-grossing live-action film of the year, making it the best possible way for the series to end.
After the passenger ferry disaster in Limit of Love, Daisuke (Ito Hideaki) has since been promoted to captain of his own rescue divers team, married to long-time girlfriend Kanna (Kato Ai), and a happy father to a newborn baby. However, Kanna begins to resent Daisuke's workaholic lifestyle, causing him to considering quitting the coast guards to save his family. At this time, oil starts spilling under an offshore oil platform co-developed by Japan, China, and Russia. During the rescue effort, an explosion causes Daisuke and several others to be trapped in the sinking platform. With a powerful typhoon approaching, the coast guards will have to fight time, forces of nature, and government bureaucrats to get Daisuke and the others home safely.
