YesAsia Editorial Description
Directed by Negishi Kichitaro (Dog in a Sidecar), Villon's Wife is one of several Osamu Dazai-based films released in 2009 to mark the 100th anniversary of the legendary writer's birth. Based on Osamu's semi-autobiographical 1947 novel, Villon's Wife depicts the tormented relationship between a strong, devoted wife and her philandering, alcoholic husband. Winning Best Actress at the 33rd Japan Academy Awards, Matsu Takako shines in the role of Sachi, a beautiful and warmhearted woman who not only endures but becomes strengthened by her cruel marriage. Acclaimed actor Asano Tadanobu saunters in and out of Sachi's life as Otami, a suicidal novelist who is as brilliant and charming as he is depressed and destructive. Set in the bustle and changes of postwar Japan, Villon's Wife also co-stars Hirosue Ryoko as Otami's lover and Tsumabuki Satoshi as Sachi's suitor.

Matsu Takako shines in the mire
Matsu Takako shines in the mire
"Villon's Wife" is a beautifully lensed, convincingly mounted, well acted film that has the viewer pulling for its plucky heroine right up until the film's final scene. How our heroine behaves in that final scene comes as a bit of a stunner, but perhaps that is due only to our 21st century expectations for a woman firmly rooted in traditional Japanese values. Matsu Takako stars as Sachi, the quiet, devoted, and dutiful wife of Otami (Asano Tadanobu), a dissolute novelist whose primary devotion is to his own dissipation. Otami drinks, womanizes, squanders his money, and seldom visits the increasingly squalid home to which he consigns his wife and young son.
When a bar owner arrives at Otami's home demanding that Sachi repay him a large sum of money that Otami had stolen from him, Sachi is shocked and bewildered. Having no money with which to repay the man, Sachi agrees to pay off the debt by working for him. Sachi's beauty and warm personality soon proves to be a magnet for male customers at the bar; as a consequence of her presence, the bar's business booms. Sachi grows in confidence and soon gains a young admirer whose advances she rebuffs. Otami reacts to his wife's blossoming by becoming increasingly depressed. He soon persuades his lover to enter a suicide pact with him. When only Otami survives the attempt, he is charged with the murder of his lover. Sachi, ever the devoted wife, is forced into a degrading deal to persuade an old suitor who now is an influential lawyer to handle Otami's defense. Will Otami respond to his new-found freedom by finally appreciating the wife who has sacrificed so much for him? Will Sachi hang on to the confidence she derived from her job in the bar as she seeks to restore her relationship with Otami? Watch "Villon's Wife" to find out. Matsu Takako gives a finely nuanced, heartbreaking performance. The supporting cast is uniformly excellent. "Villon's Wife" is an emotionally wrenching film leavened by Matsu Takako's unfailing grace. |
