Professional Review of "Wake Up Dreaming (Blu-ray Audio) (Taiwan Version)"

February 12, 2015

This professional review refers to Wake Up Dreaming (Hong Kong Version)
These days there may not even be ten songs per year that stay in people's minds, which is why fans especially anticipate new releases from top singers as a chance to add some new tracks to their music players instead of always replaying the same old songs. However, with the dip in the Hong Kong and Taiwan music markets in recent years, new original songs rarely make it big. People might not even have the chance to come into contact with new songs because of the increasingly conservative direction taken by record companies. Even big name singers are often relegated to remaking their own or other artists' old songs, packaged as audiophile releases. Music fans' expectations for good new Chinese songs have been left unfulfilled for many years. As such, the excitement is high for "God of Songs" Jacky Cheung's highly promoted all-new Mandarin album Wake Up Dreaming.

Wake Up Dreaming is the second release of 2014 to use Jacky Cheung's 30th anniversary as a promotional tagline. The first was the Jacky Cheung 30th BTB Boxset released early in the year by Warner, which suddenly reminded everyone that Jacky Cheung's voice has accompanied us for 30 long years already. If counting only new studio albums, Jacky Cheung's most recent album is the Cantonese album Private Corner released five year ago, while nearly eight years has passed since his last Mandarin album, 2007's By Your Side. In other words, Jacky hasn't put out a new album in a very long time, so this album should feel both familiar yet fresh to fans.

The album's many selling points include: (1) the simultaneous release of CD, Blu-ray Audio, LP and digital format versions plus pressing in Germany to cater to the needs of both mainstream fans and audiophiles; (2) recording at the famous Abbey Road Studios (and other studios); (3) one year of album preparation and a sole producer in Andrew Tuason to ensure complete and consistent conceptualization; and (4) extensive use of real instruments and an orchestra.

Overall, the album is a pleasant listen and Jacky's vocals are in very good form. His voice is still the same voice we all know: precise and controlled with no signs of aging or weakness, and even more intimate and affecting than in Private Corner. Compared to his previous Mandarin discography, this album brings no major breakthrough in style, but the songwriting standard is high. The songs are easy to remember and appealing, and not overly fancy nor dull.

The first single "The Rest of Time" (Track 1) creates the effect of flowing gradually like water, which fits in with the song title. Meaningful and subtle, the song is not of the ear-catching kind, but rather something to sit down and listen to quietly. Lin Xi's simple and touching lyrics convey joyful sentiments without being cheesy or melodramatic. A point to pick though are the repeated appearances of the phrase "Huadelai" ("worth it") feel a bit materialistic; of course, this is just my personal opinion.

With strong lyrics, melody and arrangement, "Tears of Time" (Track 2) is a love song that fans will like. The use of cello successfully lifts the song's mood and Jacky conveys the song's feelings with maturity. It's not the loud expression of young people, but rather something more suitable to the tastes of Jacky fans now.

On the one hand, "I Just Want to Sing" (Track 5) voices Jacky's personal thoughts. On the other hand, it also writes out the sentiments of many fans. The song brings out all kinds of feelings as many people in Asia grew up with the songs mentioned in the lyrics, such as "Felt at loss when singing 'First Kiss' as a child / Feel lonely sometimes when singing 'Goodbye Kiss'" and "From singing 'Love Has Died' to 'Undying Legend' / From 'Love Spark' to 'Messy Hair,' singing is breathing and living." The song's lively arrangement and interpretation are also invigorating.

Title plug "Wake Up Dreaming" (Track 7) should be popular at karaoke with its smooth and easy-to-remember melody. Jacky's performance is very emotional and offers a showcase in technicals, as if he's telling everyone that there's still fire left in the arsenal after thirty years. Written and composed by frequent collaborator Showan, "You Said It" (Track 3) is melodious in composition with straightforward lyrics and prominent vocals, making for a very simple yet richly emotional work. Among the other songs, "It's Not Too Late" (Track 8) and closer "Not Bad" (Track 10) are also worthwhile listens.
