High school basketball is a pretty big deal in Taiwan. While the island's professional leagues have struggled in recent years to maintain attendance and a sustainable business model, the High School Basketball League (HBL) has ballooned in popularity over the past decade. Bolstered by government support, big-name brand sponsorship and broadcast deals, the HBL commands a considerable following and boasts way higher attendance than the beleaguered SBL. HBL's Division 1 tournament is Taiwan's answer to March Madness, with final games held in packed stadiums.
It's the HBL championship tournament that provides the crucial backdrop for Chang Jung Chi's 2019 youth film We Are Champions. The coming-of-age sports drama revolves around brothers Hsiu Yu (Fandy Fan) and Tong Hao (Berant Chu), who come from a poor family and are mostly on their own. They have each other – and basketball. After getting noticed while playing street ball, younger brother Tong Hao is scouted for the backcourt of the defending HBL champion team. Older brother Hsiu Yu, who has a hearing impairment, becomes the point guard for an upstart underdog team with the potential to pull an upset. For these boys of humble origin, basketball may be the ticket to something more. As the brothers overcome hardships while training and competing with their respective teams, they also begin to drift apart from each other due to misunderstandings and heated emotions. On the court of the HBL championship tournament, they face each other as both brothers and rivals. Director Chang Jung Chi first drew acclaim in 2006 for the documentary My Football Summer about a boys soccer team. Though We Are Champions is a narrative film, there is an up-close and dynamic documentary-like vibe to the basketball portions. Chang spent significant time on field research and put the young actors through intensive training in order to realistically depict the rigorous system, high pressure and play level of elite high school basketball. Sports drama aside, We Are Champions is at its core about the relationship of two stubborn teenage brothers who are close but competitive. Chang's restrained script and direction capture the inner unrest and emotional outbursts of this rough but heartfelt brotherhood during a stormy period of their young lives. Stars Fandy Fan and Berant Chu do a fine job of conveying the adolescent emotions and dynamics of their characters. Though basketball is very popular in Taiwan, there are barely any Taiwan basketball films to speak of. Even if we expand the cinematic scope to include mainland China and Hong Kong, there are still only a handful of basketball narrative films – among them, entries like Kung Fu Dunk, Let's Go Slam Dunk! and Amazing. I'm not sure why good basketball films are so hard to come by around here, but I can confidently say We Are Champions is the best Chinese-language narrative basketball film I've seen. |
