Those boys just keep growing up! Ten years ago, Shawn Lee and Joshua Ang played not-so-bright elementary school students in Jack Neo's I Not Stupid. In 2006's I Not Stupid Too, they were high school delinquents. In this year's We Not Naughty, they're college slackers. The I Not Stupid series has really grown up with its audience over the past decade. Yet, even as the stars clearly age from movie to movie, the recurring issues the movies bring up are not only still the same, but still as relevant.
Continuing their ten-year streak of academic underperformance, Shawn Lee and Joshua Ang play buddies enrolled at a third-tier polytechnic institution in We Not Naughty. They admit right off the bat that they're in college mainly to put off mandatory army service. Jian Ren (Ang) is estranged from his motivational speaker mother, who is too busy to notice her son has strayed from the flock. Wei Jie (Lee) has a father whose gambling problems tear apart the family. The friends become runners for a loan shark, but realize too late that it's a lot easier to join a gang than to leave it. So they decide to invent a remote control gadget that can do the debt-collecting dirty work!
The first half of We Not Naughty plays out in fast episodic snippets of school and family mishaps that reflect Neo's pet themes: academic pressure, peer pressure, social hypocrisy, generation gap, familial discord, and the follies of a society that obsessively measures success by rankings. Some of it is played for laughs and satire, like Daniel Chan's annoyingly enthusiastic teacher, while other parts are alarmingly serious and on the point, like Wei Jie's sister as a perpetrator and victim of bullying. Typical of the I Not Stupid series, the film's everyday gripes escalate into major problems and life-threatening dangers that can only be resolved by family and trust.
As with all Jack Neo social comedies, We Not Naughty is an interesting mixed bag of satire and melodrama, though this third film does seem less funny than previous entries. The film and its stars have clearly moved into an older age demographic, so We Not Naughty doesn't have the child's perspective angle that made I Not Stupid and I Not Stupid Too so charming (though there's still some kid POV provided by Wei Jie's little brother). The characters are admittedly less likable - lost adults and mean-spirited teens just don't elicit as much sympathy as clueless kids - but the film also brings up more issues to chew on, like cyber bullying, domestic abuse, and the role of media. Plus, there's that whole gangster thing, and the unexpected casting of Daniel Chan as the nosy, streaking teacher.
Five years ago when I wrote about I Not Stupid Too, I said I would be more than happy to watch a third film. Now that the third film has come and gone, I would be happy to wait for a fourth. At the rate this franchise is going, Shawn Lee and Joshua Ang will probably be playing parents by then.
