Three years after the staggering success of Your Name, Shinkai Makoto returns with the youth animated fantasy Weathering With You. One of the top ten biggest Japanese films of all time, the feature bears the director's unmistakable signature of stunning animation and earth-shattering young love in a fantastically distorted world. Again featuring the music of Radwimps, the epic love story follows a boy and a girl whose destinies are linked and upturned in a time when the weather has gone awry.
Hodaka runs away from his remote island to Tokyo, but life is lonely and difficult for the broke youth. Flooded with rain every day, the big city is endlessly gray and alienating until he finds a job working for a quirky occult tabloid. One day, he meets a girl named Hina who has the mysterious ability to make the skies clear. When she prays, the rain stops briefly and the sun appears. They start a booming business to help customers who need clear skies for special events. However, the prayer ritual takes a gradual toll on Hina whose power seems to be connected to an ancient myth.

Another beauty from Shinkai Makoto

Director Shinkai Makoto's 'Weathering With You' has gorgeous animation -- even better than that in 'Your Name'. It has interesting characters and a compelling, if a bit overwrought, story. It has terrific music.
What it lacks is coherence concerning the magic that lies at the story's center -- the oddly rainy weather, the character Hina's ability to control that weather through prayer, the effect that this ability appears to be having upon Hina, the existence of weird fish in the rainy skies, the apparent existence of green worlds atop the clouds, etc. I'm not looking for these things to make scientific sense (which they obviously do not), but there should be some coherent logic to them. And there isn't any. Watch 'Weathering With You' for the intriguing characters and splendid animation. Just don't spend a lot of time trying to make sense of it. |
