When sweet life is cut short
When sweet life is cut short
Although a title of marriage, this new film from director Hyung Jin Kwon deals with the sad preperations of separation, where widowed mother Go Eun (Yoon Ah Song) is dying from gastric cancer and not letting anyone know of her disease, especially her little daughter So Ra (Hyang Gi Kim). Go Eun works as a wedding dress designer and diligently races against time to design a special dress for her daughter’s future marriage day. Go Eun also keeps her cancer secret from her brother and sister in law (who look after So Ra when Go Eun is at work) until Go Eun fatally passes out at her bother’s house at mealtime and taken to a local hospital. There Go Eun’s relatives learn of her horrible cancer. Go Eun though still keeps her illness secret from So Ra, working hard to make enough money so that her daughter will have financial help, buying So Ra the latest video game console and creating So Ra’s future wedding dress. Go Eun so much wants her daughter to be happy and confident after Go Eun dies.
So Ra though is a little put out. Why does her mum seem to have no time for her? Her mother’s late picking her up from school, doesn’t share enough pleasure time with her (apart from some video games) and only seems to have time for work, work, work. So Ra is also grieved with her classmates over So Ra’s fixation of cleanliness and creates a rift between another girl in her class after embarrassing her over a drinking beaker. So Ra then finds herself more isolated, avoiding her weekly ballet class lessons to avoid the girl there and hides in the taekwondo class instead (where she meets a male tutor who falls for So Ra’s ballet class teacher). “Wedding Dress” will wet the eyes and over indulge the tissue box (one mother-daughter scene certainly does that!). But sentiment isn’t overly melodramatic (acting is balanced too) and Eun Go’s anxious overbearing sadness of being cut short in her daughter’s life accentuates the brief time we have with each other. I liked where Go Eun dances with her daughter at work wearing one of her wedding dresses and So Ra trussed up in a tuxedo and when Eun Go, in her hospital bed, muses at herself being a ‘gift’ to So Ra as much as So Ra is to Eun Go. A nice touch also where Go Eun covers So Ra with her umbrella whenever it rains and of the final indication of So Ra’s coming to terms with the inevitable. A lovely sad film of the important value families are to each other. Especially when you’re hit by the death of a loved one. |
