YesAsia Editorial Description

Directed by Lin Chun Yang (The Soul of Bread), When Miracle Meets Maths is the first installment of the "Metro of Love" film series that uses the Taipei Metro as backdrop for romance. Jade Chou (Sex Appeal) and Chang Han (Taipei Exchanges) form a believable would-be couple finding their way in life and love in this subtle, whimsical urban romance that also co-stars Lu Yi Ching (A Place of One's Own), Isa Hsieh, Kao Ying Hsuan (Lust, Caution) and Bruce (Cafe. Waiting. Love).

After breaking up with her fiance, Jing Hui (Jade Chou) went to Japan on her own to pursue a photography career. When she returns to Taipei after eight years away, her mother immediately sends her off on one blind date after another. Zheng Xiong (Chang Han), a Silicon Valley computer engineer, has also been going on dates arranged by his aunt since returning to Taiwan for work. They meet by chance when Zheng Xiong mistakes her for his blind date, and begin to grow close after repeatedly bumping into each other. However, both of them have lives elsewhere and aren't planning on staying in Taipei for long. Can these two people come up with the right formula for love?

Taipei Metro of Love
Produced by Yeh Tien Lun, the "Metro of Love" project is a series of urban romances, each tied to a different Taipei Metro station, directed by up-and-coming Taiwan filmmakers. While the premise sounds like it could become repetitive or extended marketing for the Taipei Metro, the first installment, Lin Chun Yang's warm, ponderous and charming When Miracle Meets Maths, indicates that the series' love stories serve more as love letters to the city through which the Taipei Metro runs.

Jade Chou stars as Jing Hui, a woman who years ago broke off an engagement and went on her own to Japan where she gradually built a career as a photographer. Independent and self-aware, she refuses to marry just because it's expected, but her anxious mother (Lu Yi Ching) drags her to fortune-telling and matchmaking sessions the minute she steps foot back in Taipei. Chang Han plays Silicon Valley engineer Zheng Xiong who has also returned briefly to Taipei. He is a more willing participant to the blind dates his aunt arranges, but scares off prospective dates with his very direct and unsentimental remarks about what he's looking for in a partner. After meeting in a blind date mix-up, Jing Hui and Zheng Xiong keep bumping into each other and begin to develop a bond.

When Miracle Meets Maths squeezes a fair number of questionably necessary gimmicks and conflicts into its story: Zheng Xiong waxes romantic about the significance of math formulas (although not as much as the title or promotional copy suggests). Jing Hui's ex-boyfriend wants to get back together and her superstitious mother disapproves of Zheng Xiong because their surnames clash. Bruce wanders in an out of the story as a cupid. Even the cliched childhood flashback and airport run make appearances. And yet, none of these things takes away from the film's precise, pensive tone and comfortable, realistic pairing.

While the world around them is full of quirks and quakes, Jing Hui and Zheng Xiao stay mellow, mature and steadfast to living life their way. Though both struggle internally with immediate feelings and longtime misgivings, neither are shaken by familial or social expectations as they firmly go about their business and think things out at their own pace. This mix of mildly magical and melodramatic details with reasonable, introspective protagonists balances out the film's light, slow-burning romance. Jade Chou, in particular, is wonderful in the role of a modern woman trying to live and love on her own terms. Lin Chun Yang's direction is also measured and unobtrusive while weaving together the film's disparate elements.

Besides the romance and family drama, When Miracle Meets Maths plays especial attention to its setting, the historic neighborhood of Dadaocheng in western Taipei (its Metro station is Daqiaotou). The film highlights what's left of the old-time nostalgic charm of Dadaocheng, which has undergone extensive redevelopment in recent years, and gently stresses the importance of remembrance and preservation. Backed by the recurring notes of Mayday's "Contentment," the protagonists weave through local markets, visit the Yue Lao temple and a dusty fountain pen shop, and regularly round the corner from traditional architecture to modern streets. This gentle air of nostalgia reinforces the theme of finding and moving at one's own deliberate pace in a fast-changing world filled with different values, voices and pressures.
