YesAsia Editorial Description

Combining exciting martial arts action and treasure-hunting adventure, the entertaining Wu Dang marks the latest collaboration between world-famous action director Corey Yuen and director Patrick Leung after The Twins Effect II, and more recently Red Cliff. The China-Hong Kong co-production features action stars Vincent Zhao, Fan Siu Wong, and Dennis To, with popular actresses Mini Yang and Xu Jiao delivering rare turns as kung fu girls. Shot on location in the legendary Wu Dang Mountains - the sacred Taoist site in China recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site - the film seeks to promote the idea that there is more to Taoist martial arts than Tai Chi by presenting a variety of little-known Taoist martial arts styles.

Legend has it that seven rare treasures are hidden on the Wu Dang Mountains. In the early Chinese Republic years, martial artists the nation over gather at the Mountains to take part in the martial arts tournament held once every century. Archaeology professor Tang Yunlong (Vincent Zhao) and his daughter Tang Ning (Xu Jiao) are after the treasures and they team up with mysterious girl Tian Xin (Mini Yang), who is there on a family mission. Meanwhile, uninitiated Taoist apprentice Shui Heyi (Fan Siu Wong) is surprisingly appointed to represent the Wu Dang clan in the tournament, much to the chagrin of powerful Taoist priest Bai Long (Dennis To), who is also the defender of the treasures.

In early Republican China, rumors were going around abut the treasure in Wudang Mountains. An American conspiratoor (Vincent Chiu) took his well-trained kung fu daughter (Xu Jiao) to Wudang by sponsoring a Taoist martial arts competition, to steal the treasure. Out of expectation, a disciple (Louis Fan) represented Wudang to compete with other martial arts masters for the championship. During the competition, resentment incurred against different parties, the relationship became complicated, the American conspirators fell in love with the woman (Mini Yang) who is the key to the treasure. The secret of the reasure had been revealed. The treasure is the key of the magnetic field of Wudang, if it’s stolen, Wudang would be devastated. To protect Wudang, a group of young heroes rallied around to defeat grand masters. It’s the time the long-lost Wudang martial arts returned….

"Wu Dang" opens with antiquities expert Tang Yunlong (Vincent Zhao) appraising a treasured stone sword. Tang removes it from its box and determines that the sword is a fake. Within the box he finds a map showing the hiding places on Mt. Wudang of seven treasures. Tang pockets the map, then, together with his daughter, sets out for the mountain to seek the treasure. Two questions: First, why did he think he could keep the map? It certainly didn't belong to him. Second, if the sword was a fake, then wouldn't the map also be fake? The filmmakers give inconsistent answers to the latter question.

At the famed mountain, Tang's daughter Ning (Xu Jiao) competes in a once-in-a-century nationwide martial arts competition. (Actress Xu Jiao was a gawky, not particularly athletic 14 year old girl at the time of filming.) The Wudang monastery's entrant in the competition is Shui Heyi (Fan Siu Wong), who is a lowly monk entirely unskilled in martial arts who, on the eve of the competition, gets a crash course in something called 'sleeping kung fu'. Against all odds (and against all common sense), Ning and Heyi defeat all of their opponents and end up in the finals against each other, even while Ning appears to be dying from a genetic disease. Along the way, Ning and Heyi have fallen in love with each other (note to filmmakers: it is downright creepy to cast as lovers a 38 year old actor and a 14 year old actress).

While the competition is ongoing, Tang undertakes his search for the treasures shown on his map. He is joined in the quest by the lovely Tian Xin (Mini Yang), who seeks the hidden sword, which is an heirloom of her family. Along the way they face challenges in finding the treasure, evading the guardians of the holy sites where the treasure is hidden, and fighting the mobsters of the thug who sought to sell the sword in the movie's opening scenes. Tang and Tian Xin's major foe, however, is Bai Long (Dennis To), a priest who wants to employ the treasures in a Taoist ceremony that will turn him into a powerful 'holy spirit'.

Setting aside the flaws in the story and casting and a few excessively talky scenes, what makes "Wu Dang" watchable is the remarkably creative and artful action direction by Corey Yuen. Dennis To (who makes a very good bad guy) and Mini Yang shine in the action sequences. Fast forward through the deadly dialogue and marvel at Corey Yuen's mastery.
