YesAsia Editorial Description

Based on Ni Luo's novel series about the magical and mysterious adventures of an immortal, Wu Xin: The Monster Killer turned into a critical hit in 2015 thanks to its strong production values, intriguing mysteries, and moving romance. Two years later, the supernatural period fantasy returns with a sequel set some years later in 1930s Shanghai. Elvis Han reprises as happy-go-lucky immortal Wu Xin who has lost all memories of his past encounters. He spends his days telling fortunes, exorcising demons and bickering with his spirit friend Bai Liuli, played by Mike D'Angelo. Landy Li (Huckleberry Friends) joins the series as Su Tao, a girl whom Wu Xin takes in and protects after her family gets massacred over a magical mirror she acquired. Sebrina Chen and Ian Wang return in new characters that are linked to their previous characters from the first series, while Gao Taiyu (Xuan Yuan Sword: Han Cloud) plays a power-consumed dark arts practitioner who faces off against Wu Xin.

Wu Xin is still good the second time around
Wu Xin: The Monster Killer 2 has one undeniable shortcoming common to sequels: it's not as good as its predecessor. However, that doesn't mean it's not good.

Wu Xin 2 picks up the adventures of Elvis Han's demon-exorcising immortal some two decades after he has lost memories of the events and people from the first season of the supernatural period fantasy series. Continuing the cycle of his endless wanderings, the good-natured Wu Xin resets with new encounters, exorcisms and enemies.

Along with the reset, the supporting cast also sees some changes. Sebrina Chen, Ian Wang and Mike D'Angelo return but Gina Jin and Zhang Ruoyun do not, which does hurt the cast appeal. Landy Li joins as Wu Xin's new romantic interest Su Tao, a young girl who unwittingly gets trapped inside a magical mirror. Wu Xin rescues her from the mirror's reverse world and later takes her in after her entire family gets killed by dark forces that are after the mirror. In comparison to the previous season's strong-minded Yueya and Gina Jin's sassy performance, Landy Li's Su Tao generally underwhelms as a naïve damsel-in-distress and the weakest link of the second season.

Gao Taiyu fares much better as new nemesis Baichuan, an obsessed onmyoji who practices dark arts and challenges the hero to dangerous duels. Adding onmyodo into the world of Wu Xin is an interesting twist and Baichuan makes for a suitably complex antagonist against the historical backdrop of Japan-occupied Shanghai.

Among the returning cast, Mike's increased presence as Wu Xin's sorcerer spirit buddy provides amusing banter, bringing some much needed lighter moments (and fighting reinforcement) to the series. Ian Wang occupies a less likable character this time around as the friend who vacillates between loyalty and greed, but the morally conflicted role actually gives the actor more room to perform.

The biggest revelation of this season, though, has to be Sebrina Chen's surprisingly convincing gender-bending turn as mysterious underworld fixer Ding Xiaomao. The male voice dubbing helps a lot, of course, but beyond that, she really transforms her appearance and demeanor to carry the role. Who knew the creepy-cute doll-like Yue Qiruo of the first series would be so convincing as a cool and collected mob boss? Finding out the origin and motivations of Ding Xiaomao is one of the most intriguing aspects of the series.

In 2015, Wu Xin: The Monster Killer garnered rave reviews not only because of its strong production values and storytelling, but also because it came out of nowhere with a no-name cast and surprised everyone with how great it was. Thanks to the success of the first series, Wu Xin became a name that commands expectations that weren't there before, and quality standards for Chinese web dramas in general have increased greatly since 2015. Given the realigned expectations and cast changes, Wu Xin 2 still measures up very well with comparable productions in terms of writing, directing, effects and world creation. Despite the slight drop-off from the first to the second season, Wu Xin as a franchise continues to deliver at a level that few representatives of the genre can match.
