YesAsia Editorial Description
The classic tale of Zhong Wu Yen (or Chung Mo Yim) is brought to colorful, hilarious life in Wu Yen, a 2001 Lunar New Year offering directed by Johnny To and Wai Ka Fai. Wu Yen (Sammi Cheng) is a woman warrior fated to marry the Emperor (Anita Mui in a cross-dressing role), but their foretold union is complicated by the evil Fairy Enchantress (Cecilia Cheung), who desires Wu Yen but is spurned. Angry, she curses Wu Yen with "ugliness", and goes after the Emperor herself! Undeterred, Wu Yen storms the palace, and before long a love triangle of hilarious proportions erupts!
Johnny To and Wai Ka Fai direct Wu Yen at a frenzied pace, and keep the anachronistic sight gags and silliness coming fast and furious. The acclaimed commercial filmmakers bring a light, engaging tone to Wu Yen, and create winning characters that are embodied perfectly by the troika of stellar leading ladies. Sammi Cheng was rewarded with a Best Actress Award by the Hong Kong Film Critics Society for her charming, vulnerable, but above all strong preformance as the noble Zhong Wu Yen. Featuring beautiful costumes, hilarious comedy, and wonderful star turns, Wu Yen is a delightful and even touching Lunar New Year Comedy!

The two fall in love at first sight and soon made a solemn pledge of love. Thinking that this is a heavenly made match, but out of the blues, a large patch of mole appears on Wu Yen's face, which makes Emperor Qi runs away in horror. Actually this is caused by a fox fairy (Cecilia Cheung).
The fox fairy forces Wu Yen to make love with her, or she will be ugly for the rest of her life. Although beauty is commendable, love is more valuable and thus the loyal and steadfast Wu Yen refuses the fox fairy's request. ANITA MUI RULES!
ANITA MUI RULES!
This is the first time I've seen Sammi or Cecilia and thought that both of them were good in this movie. Anita steals the movie from everyone! I've seen Anita in dramas or light comedies and always liked her. But to see her in this part was hilarious! From her body language/movements to her voice and delivery of her lines was just outstanding. Kudos to whoever cast her in this part. If you are a fan of any of these ladies, you will love this movie! |

you could do without this...
Frankly, the movie scared the bejeezus out of me. And I'm a big Sammi Cheng fan. It is a very unique film in the industry (and has a decent soundtrack), but has few other merits. Most of the attempts at humor left me wincing and/or grimacing.
However, if you like Cecilia, or Sammi, or Anita, I suppose this movie would mean something to you (you would have to sit through watching them transition b/t male <-> female...strange). Wu-Yen is quite a pretty movie, with a certain silly flair to it. Me though, I think I finished the movie with a certain sick feeling in my stomach. |

funny movie
i love the music of this movie, there are some parts the characters acting kinda silly and stupid to bring laugh to the viewers which I think so GAY and not necessary. But overall this movie is good. I rate it a 8/10. The emperor Qi is played by a female actor (Anita Mui) instead of male actor. This is very clever and original idea. But this makes the movie lacking of romance between characters. Of course Anita Mui cannot convey 100% the love and the pussy whipped nature of a man toward a woman (since she's not a man). Sami Cheng did a great job anyway. I would recommend this movie to my friends anyway. It teaches us a great lesson about love. |
