YesAsia Editorial Description

One of the most representative youth films of Korean Cinema, the classic 1976 comedy Yalkae, A Joker in High School was a big hit with young audiences and helped launched a teen movie boom in the seventies and early eighties. Directed by Seok Rae Myeong, the film is based on Cho Heun Pa's best-selling novel about the cheeky adventures of a troublemaking high school student. Using generation gaps, school antics, and teen trivialities as fodder for witty dialogue and lighthearted laughs, Yalkae, A Joker in High School played very well with teenagers of the time, inspiring numerous sequels and spin-offs.

Nicknamed Yalkae, notorious high school prankster Du Su (Lee Seung Hyun) is always up to no good with his buddy Yong Ho (Jin Woo Young). Both of them have been held back a year, but instead of studying they continue to cause trouble for their teachers and classmates. Du Su gleefully pulls a prank on his tattling classmate Ho Cheol, but he has a change of heart when he finds out Ho Cheol gets injured as a result.

Comes with booklet and six postcards.

Classic coming-of-age story Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
"Yalkae, A Joker In High School" begins as a comedy before radically transforming into melodrama for the film's final forty minutes. Fresh-faced Lee Seung Hyun stars as Na Doo-soo, the 'yalkae' or mischief-maker of the movie's title. Doo-soo and his buddy Yong-ho (Jin Yoo Young) are inveterate class clowns and pranksters forced to repeat their second year of high school. The film's first hour features lots of classroom comedy of a familiar sort. The comedy, however, sometimes leaves the viewer feeling uncomfortable as Doo-soo's pranks can be quite cruel. Bespectacled brainiac Ho-cheol (Kim Jeong Hoon), the hardest-working boy in class, is a particular target of the mischief-makers' bullying.

Doo-soo's irresponsible behavior eventually goes too far, causing the alienation of his favorite teacher, the souring of his relationship with the girl he adores, and dramatic unforeseen consequences for one of his classmates. The resulting melodrama can seem a bit over the top, but its simple, unsophisticated, good-natured earnestness eventually wins the viewer over and yields a satisfying ending. While the production values of "Yalkae", particularly its editing and incidental music, are of the bargain basement variety, its performances are convincing and its direction is sturdy. They don't make 'em like this anymore!
