  1. Itsumono Fuukei (First Press Limited Edition) (Japan Version) Itsumono Fuukei (First Press Limited Edition) (Japan Version) Saito Kazuyoshi
    Saito Kazuyoshi x Chibi Maruko-chan
November 21, 2019 Picked By Sanwei See all this editor's picks
Saito Kazuyoshi and Chibi Maruko-chan is the collaboration I didn't know I needed! The singer-songwriter brings smiles to faces with Itsumo no Fuukei, the 12th ending theme of the iconic anime series. This delightfully upbeat and folksy rock ditty lifts spirits with plucky beats and a jovial rhythm. Notably, the lyrics about a town's everyday scenery are by late Chibi Maruko-chan creator Momoko Sakura, who especially had Saito in mind when she wrote the song. Saito's light melody and whimsical, energizing arrangement really suit the lyrics and the timeless everyday charm of the anime series. The single's side tracks build on the wistful, nostalgic feel with two slower and melancholic guitar... [read more]
  2. BVNDIT Mini Album Vol. 1 - BE! BVNDIT Mini Album Vol. 1 - BE! BVNDIT
    Be Ambitious N Do It!
November 15, 2019 Picked By Violet See all this editor's picks
BVNDIT first gained attention for being the first girl group from MNH Entertainment, the agency that debuted former I.O.I member and successful soloist Chung Ha. Known for their charismatic voices and charming performances, BVNDIT has launched a series of rhythmical and edgy songs that make them stand out among female rookies. The girls now officially bring their first mini-album BE! BE! opens with a short but dreamy future bass intro and then proceeds into the title track Dumb (Track 2). Latin pop-inspired songs have been popular in the K-pop scene in recent years, and BVNDIT joins the trend with this Latin electropop number co-penned by LDN Noise. In the chic and charismatic song, the... [read more]

    12 Angry Teens
October 31, 2019 Picked By Sanwei See all this editor's picks
Even without knowing anything about 12 Suicidal Teens, the film grabs attention right away with its alarming title. Once you know more, the film only gets more interesting. Adapted from Ubakata Tow's 2016 novel, the teen mystery has a clear and intriguing construct that sets up the puzzle. One sunny morning, 12 teens gather at an abandoned hospital to die together. The teens, who don't know each other, arrive one by one and follow instructions provided by the organizer to enter the hospital, retrieve a number tag, and find a designated room. However, they realize there's an extra person in the room, a lifeless body already lying on a 13th bed. One of the teens notices that this 13th person... [read more]

    A brand new start
October 31, 2019 Picked By Violet See all this editor's picks
Though Produce 101 is controversial in so many ways, it's undeniable that the show has been a great platform for trainees to shine with their talents. Hip-hop label Brand New Music is a typical example – their trainees from Produce 101 Season 2 and the recent Produce X 101 all received lots of love for their skills and performances. Much like the BNM trainees from Season 2, Kim Si Hun, Yun Jung Hwan, Hong Seong Jun and Lee Eun Sang impressed audiences with their self-composed track Go Get Her during their first evaluation on Produce X 101. After three months, Si Hun, Jung Hwan and Seong Jun finished the competition at ranks #27, #38 and #51, respectively. With Eun Sang making it to the... [read more]

The wait is finally over – Super Junior is back! Ten years ago, who would have thought that a decade would pass in the blink of an eye? Celebrating their military discharge and 14th anniversary, Super Junior spawns a wave of "newtro" sounds in their ninth full-length album Time_Slip! It's been a while since Super Junior came back with a fun, quirky and upbeat new song. The uptempo pop dance plug SUPER Clap (Track 2) cheers people up by asking them to throw their worries away and have fun: "Let's shake the world and wake it up. Let your body dance to the rhythm. Together, SUPER Clap. Follow me, SUPER Clap. Everyone, SUPER Clap." Produced by Sebastian Thott, whose song credits includes Tae... [read more]

    Taking a chance on love
October 23, 2019 Picked By Sanwei See all this editor's picks
Last year, Ahn Pan Suk applied the moody, atmospheric filter of Secret Love Affair and Heard It Through the Grapevine to a more conventionally scripted and naturalistic romance drama, and created the sweet hit Something in the Rain. This year, he improves on the warm and stirring formula with the similar yet different One Spring Night. One Spring Night employs the same screenwriter (Kim Eun), the same leading man (Jung Hae In) and similar music and aesthetics as Something in the Rain, together forming companion pieces about modern love. This time, Jung Hae In plays neighborhood pharmacist Yoo Ji Ho, who carries scars and insecurities about his past relationship and current status as a... [read more]
  7. BTOB: Lim Hyun Sik Mini Album Vol. 1 - RENDEZ-VOUS BTOB: Lim Hyun Sik Mini Album Vol. 1 - RENDEZ-VOUS Lim Hyun Sik
    Exploring Hyun Sik's universe
October 21, 2019 Picked By Violet See all this editor's picks
From Piece of BTOB's Swimming to Hyena on the Keyboard's "If I Hug You," these solo singles might not be as widely known as BTOB's group releases, but they definitely best represent Hyun Sik's personal taste in music. Known as BTOB's "father of music," Hyun Sik pursues his solo career with five soft and alternative self-produced rock pieces in his first mini-album Rendez-Vous. Alternative rock tune Dear Love (Track 5), the title song of the album, tells a melancholic and desperate story about a relationship across the universe ("Dear love, dear you, who entangled with me. Please don't be in pain, 'cause I will be in pain too. Oh my love, how is the sky at that place? Are you also looking at... [read more]

    Heroes come in small sizes
October 17, 2019 Picked By Sanwei See all this editor's picks
Studio Ponoc continues down the Studio Ghibli path with a collection of whimsical, lovingly animated short films, and you don't have to go to a museum in Tokyo to watch them like the Ghibli shorts. The anthology Modest Heroes features original shorts written and directed by three former Ghibli animators, including Yonebayashi Hiromasa. The three charming shorts are very different in story but carry the common theme of small heroes. In the case of Yonebayashi's Kanini & Kanino, the heroes are quite literally small. Yonebayashi created a beautiful yet perilous countryside world for thimble-sized people in 2010's The Borrower Arrietty. Kanini & Kanino creates a beautiful yet perilous... [read more]

    Sending nightmares away
October 2, 2019 Picked By Violet See all this editor's picks
Dreamcatcher is probably one of those groups where you might not recognize all the members' faces and names, but you've at least listened to one of their songs before. Their unique band sound and distinctive tones make them stand out from the crowd – not to mention their successful "Nightmare" series concept. The mysterious girls explore between dreams and nightmares again in the special mini-album Raid of Dream. Dreamcatcher is best known for their one-of-a-kind hard rock music that bears only a little resemblance to the usual K-pop tunes. Starting off with the funky dubstep Intro (Track 1), Raid of Dream carries the lead single Déjà vu (Track 2) mainly produced by LEEZ, who also wrote the... [read more]

    Hurrah for radiology
September 30, 2019 Picked By Sanwei See all this editor's picks
There's a new medical drama or two just about every season in Japan, but Fuji TV's spring 2019 drama Radiation House particularly caught my interest for its focus on radiology. Earlier this year, a sudden illness landed me in the hospital. Prior to this, I hadn't thought too much about radiology, but my bout with a unicorn infection made me realize just how much rides on radiology. I was seen by specialists of different departments with various conjectures about what might be wrong with me, but the diagnosis depended on the radiology results. After each inconclusive report, I got booked for another type of radiology test. The last test, a PET scan, ultimately provided the needed answer.... [read more]

    Little Glee Monster on fire
September 30, 2019 Picked By Sanwei See all this editor's picks
As the host country of the Rugby World Cup 2019, Japan pulled off a major upset victory over powerhouse Ireland this past weekend. Now I'm no rugby fan, but I am a big fan of NHK's theme song for the World Cup – Little Glee Monster's ECHO. A sporting event support song should rouse up the fighting spirit of the listener, and ECHO does exactly that from the very first note. Written and composed by Imai Ryosuke, the song begins straight away with cheering and clapping that gets you fired up. The first verse rings loud and clear with poignant lyrics remembering the shared experience of sweat and tears: "The moment when our eyes meet, there's no need to exchange words / our heart's beating... The distance between humanity and tragedy
September 26, 2019 Picked By Sanwei See all this editor's picks
Taiwan television reaches a new high with The World Between Us, which is absolutely one of the best series to come out of Asia this year. Set in the aftermath of a random mass shooting, the ensemble drama explores the impact, coverage and consequences of the senseless tragedy in a manner that is both deeply personal and widely relevant. Over ten episodes, Lu Shih Yuan's script weaves different characters and conflicts together, posing many difficult and thought-provoking questions along the way about justice, ethics, compassion, grief, mental health and the media. The World Between Us begins a few years after a mass shooting incident, the details of which are gradually revealed over the... [read more]

Produce 101 has already reached its fourth season but it's still going strong! Last month, the 11 winners of Produce X 101 debuted as X1 with their chart-topping first mini-album Bisang: Quantum Leap. Bisang, which means "fly" in Korean, not only connects with the group's butterfly concept but also the lyrics of the album tracks! Intro track Stand Up (Track 1) simply expresses the group's aspiration and concept in a rhythmical brass and riff-based melody – "Stand up, stand up. Fly high, fly high! Spread your wings! Don't forget today's flight, and don't forget yesterday's dream." Were you stunned by X1's powerful and dazzling stage performance of their title single Flash (Track 2)? Produced... [read more]

With two Produce 48 members in the midst, Yuehua Entertainment’s girl group Everglow successfully attracted a growing fanbase with their catchy debut hit Bon Bon Chocolat. The rising rookie group's new album Hush recently arrived just a few months after Arrival of Everglow! The structure and concept of this album is quite similar to their three-track debut release. It begins with a dreamy intro song, then proceeds into a powerful title track, and wraps up with a slightly brighter tune. "Goodbye, Au Revior, Adios" – say goodbye to your ex-lover by singing this simple yet powerful line! Adios (Track 2) is created by the strong composer lineup of Olof Lindskog (Super Junior-M's Swing), Hayley... [read more]

August 29, 2019 Picked By Sanwei See all this editor's picks
I Will Not Work Overtime, Period... is what I wish I could say about myself while I write this well past office hours. As that familiar feeling of staying late in a mostly empty office settles in, I am particularly inspired to talk about TBS's spring 2019 drama starring Yoshitaka Yuriko. In recent years, greater awareness has been raised about Japan's unhealthy overwork culture and "black companies" that force long hours on employees. Pointedly, this workplace series is not set at one of those black companies. Instead, heroine Higashiyama Yui works at a website design company whose CEO's stated policy encourages staff to leave on time. But few people do besides Yui, who sets herself the... [read more]

After the end of I.O.I's promotion in 2017, Weki Meki was one of the most anticipated rookies as the group includes two members from I.O.I. Two years since their debut, Weki Meki put aside their signature fierce girl crush style and brought a more pure and cheerful side in their last single album LOCK END LOL. Following the "school crush" concept of LOCK END LOL, the girl group returns with a "summer crush" concept in their repackage album WEEK END LOL! Producer Andrew Choi, whose music credits include EXO's Lucky One and Super Junior's "Evanesce," collaborates with Weki Meki for the first time for their lead single Tiki-Taka (99%) (Track 1). In February, JYP Entertainment's latest girl group ITZY debuted with the smash hit Dalla Dalla and broke plenty of records. Their unique style and music has successfully made them one of the most outstanding newcomers of the year. This summer, ITZY beats the heat with refreshing tunes in their first EP IT'z ICY! "I see that I'm icy" – ITZY may look Icy on the outside, but they exhibit confidence and passion in the popular lead single ICY (Track 1). J.Y. Tea for the soul
July 31, 2019 Picked By Sanwei See all this editor's picks
The tea ceremony has a long history and esteemed status in Japanese culture. Besides being a refined art and ritual for the preparation and enjoyment of tea, the Way of Tea embodies zen principles of harmony, purity and tranquility. One particularly famous saying that is associated with the tea ceremony is ichi-go ichi-e, or "one time one meeting"; each tea ceremony is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. While such poetic pursuits and principles may seem rather abstract and far off, Omori Tatsushi's gentle drama Every Day A Good Day brings the meaning and beauty of the tea ceremony into ordinary life through the growth and experiences of an everyday woman. We first meet heroine Noriko (Kuroki... [read more]
