All In One: Hong Kong Boy Band MIRROR in 12 Songs
In four years, MIRROR has released one studio album and 12 group singles, and most of the members have further showcased their music talents with solo projects. Though they may not be the best vocalists in the music industry, they've undoubtedly grown as singers and artists while giving us chart-topping hits of different styles and genres. Many of MIRROR's songs have fresh and relatable themes besides just romance, and this is part of what makes the Cantopop boy band special among Hong Kong singers.
This summer, MIRROR is holding their first Hong Kong Coliseum tour MIRROR.WE.ARE LIVE CONCERT 2022, and all 12 shows predictably sold out immediately. We've made a playlist of 12 representative MIRROR songs to jam to ahead of their Hong Kong Coliseum concerts in July!
MIRROR - IGNITED
Get Ignited with MIRROR's addictive dance track that burns with the red hot feeling of love! The song was released in 2020 in two versions – Too Hot to Handle Version and Funky Version – with different arrangements and dance choreography. The former has an EDM-laced sound with an edgier vibe, while the latter has a delightfully funky arrangement that amplifies the playful, old-school feel of the melody. No matter the version, the super catchy chorus will have you smiling and bopping along. MIRROR broke into the yearly Top Ten of both the Ultimate Song Chart Awards Presentation and Chill Club Awards for the first time with Ignited.
MIRROR - WARRIOR
MIRROR makes a powerful statement with Warrior, their first group single of 2021. Released in March before the ONE & ALL LIVE 2021 tour in May, the epic rock-infused dance hit resoundingly shows MIRROR's fighting spirit and their growth into Hong Kong's top artists. Written by Riley Lam with rap lyrics by Lokman and Alton, the rousing anthem fights back against detractors while declaring MIRROR's determination to forge their own path and usher in a new era. This is the sound of MIRROR's "warrior heart"!
MIRROR - BOSS
No matter what you're doing, as long as you have great passion for it, you can always be your own Boss. MIRROR's third single of 2021, Boss topped music charts with its fashionable blend of sounds. Lokman and Alton again demonstrated their witty rap lyric writing for the upbeat and captivating dance number that exhibits MIRROR's burning passion for their job as performers. It's a bit dancier than Ignited and a bit catchier than Warrior – and that sums up why it's been recognized as one of the Top Ten Hits at the Ultimate Song Chart Awards Presentation 2021 and the Chill Club Awards 21/22.
MIRROR - 12
On December 22, 2021, MIRROR surprised fans with the release of their first-ever Christmas single 12, composed and produced by up-and-coming singer-songwriter Gareth.T. 12 not only represents the month of December, but it's also a special number for MIRROR and MIRO. This song sparks holiday spirit with its joyful R&B melody blended with sweet and wholesome lyrics about feeling grateful for loved ones. This is the best song to vibe to during the festive season, plus the best gift from the 12 members to show their love and gratitude to every MIRROR fan.
Keung To - Dear My Friend,
Keung To's poignant 2021 solo song Dear My Friend, is a letter to his close friend who suddenly left the world. The ballad's touching lyrics written by Riley Lam relay the childhood memories and warm camaraderie of friendship, and Keung To's feeling of loss but determination to live brighter for his friend. Composed by Phil Lam, Dear My Friend, brought Keung To his second My Favorite Song grand prize at the Ultimate Song Chart Awards Presentation. It's also one of the most viewed Cantonese music videos of all time on YouTube with over 17 million views, a testament to Keung To's great popularity in Hong Kong and the universal sentiments of this stirring song.
Edan Lui - Mr. E's Series of Unfortunate Events
Though he may be known for his "bad luck" with games on variety shows, Edan Lui assures that he is not ill-fated on his solo music journey with the strong debut single "Mr. E's Series of Unfortunate Events." The witty, quirky Mr. E takes his music career seriously from the get-go – he co-composed the song with Cousin Fung and Raymond Wan, and Wyman Wong is credited as lyricist. Edan's emotional vocals, the soul-stirring composition and that extraordinary piano bridge together construct a great ballad that stands out as one of the most memorable Cantopop love songs released in 2021. Edan has followed with several other singles, but "Mr. E's Series of Unfortunate Events" remains Hong Kongers' favorite as the most-streamed single of 2021 on Spotify Hong Kong and KKBOX Hong Kong.
Jer Lau - Madman's Diary
As the official main vocalist of MIRROR, Jer always strives to show his artistry and skills through his meaningful solo music projects. After wrapping up the Tale trilogy of singles, Jer unleashes his inner madman in the first release of his Reborn series. Crafted by composer Wilson Ng Lam Fung and lyricist Siu Hak, this ambitious masterpiece sees Jer dramatically enacting a "Madman's Diary” through his impressive vocal performance, with effortless growls and smooth transitions from low to high notes that highlight his wide vocal range. Every time Jer performs "Madman's Diary" live, he stuns audiences with his charismatic stage presence that makes him one of the most promising Hong Kong singers of the new generation.
Anson Lo - Megahit
True to the title, Anson Lo's seventh solo single is a Megahit that was voted Song of the Year at the Chill Club Awards 21/22 and ranked in the Top Ten for airplay at the 2021 Ultimate Song Chart Awards Presentation. The exuberant dance jam gets stuck in your head fast with its energetic melody, pulsating beats and dynamic lyrics by Wyman Wong that liken the clashing symphony of sound to the spark of attraction and connection between people. Don't miss the song's fun music video filled with Anson's slick yet cute dance moves, not to mention various celeb appearances.
Anson Lo & Edan Lui - Sudden Heartbeat
"Is it you? Is it love?" Besides playing a sweet couple in the 2021 ViuTV drama series Ossan's Love Hong Kong, Anson Lo and Edan Lui also sing the romcom's sweet theme song "Sudden Heartbeat." Composed by Raymond Wan and written by T-Rexx, the duet is an upbeat and catchy pop love song that describes the surprised, excited and anxious feeling of being around someone who suddenly makes your heart race. With June being LGBTQ Pride Month, this song rings especially heartwarming with its inclusive message of love is love, without right or wrong.
Ian Chan - A Day To Breathe With You
While other MIRROR members are keen on pursuing different music styles and themes in their solo releases, Ian persistently stays on his path as the "ballad prince" with love songs that match his romantic image. "A Day To Breathe With You," his first #1 single in 2022, exquisitely paints lovers embracing under the sun and enjoying themselves in a peaceful place. As the composer and singer of the song, Ian steals hearts with his delicate delivery of this warm love letter penned by Oscar, who also wrote the singer's 2021 single "Don't Understand."
Anson Kong - Shin no Maki
As we grow up, it's easy to get lost in the fast-paced world, but Anson Kong reminds us to always keep our faith strong in his new 2022 solo song Shin no Maki. Giving off the vibe of a Japanese anime theme song, Shin no Maki inspires listeners to stay true to ourselves and to keep our chins up, come rain or shine. Nowhere Boys' heartening composition and arrangement plus Oscar's motivational lyrics channel hot-blooded energy to lift our spirits and push us forward. The song's well-made animated music video also brings back so many childhood memories!
Jeremy Lee - Half
Jeremy's solo debut single Half arrived belatedly in early 2022, over three years after MIRROR's group debut. Portrayed as half-angel and half-demon in the song's music video, Jeremy presents his androgynous charm to the fullest to convey the importance of self-exploration and self-acceptance through this tailor-made work by composer Wilson Ng Lam Fung and lyricist Chow Yiu Fai. Half takes us on a soul-searching journey that makes us ponder: who am I, what am I, what I desire, and what I want to be.
