"Heart Attack," "Miniskirt," "Like A Cat," "Bingle Bangle," Excuse Me
– I bet K-pop stans can sing along to at least one of these AOA smash hits. But have you ever thought they are actually more than just K-pop sweethearts who pull off catchy songs with sultry concepts?
Thanks to Queendom, AOA's stage presence, talents and personal charms have finally been brought to light. New Moon introduces the new AOA with a brand new, captivating concept and promising sounds. "Come See Me" (Track 1) starts off with beats that resemble cowboys and hunters, connecting with the charismatic "moon hunter" characters in their teasers and music video. The addictive melody and lines in "Come See Me" somehow bring back memories of the 2nd and 3rd generations of K-pop, back when we could sing along to the majority of songs immediately after listening only once. Yuna and Hye Jeong nail it as always with their melodic voices, and Seol Hyun's slightly husky tone suits the vibe of this song very much, especially during the hook "Come see me."
AOA not only showcased their talents on Queendom, but also their self-empowerment through their stages. Perhaps the mid-tempo synth pop plug My Way (Track 5) is the anthem that best channels their change and new image. The rhythmical tune carries funky, retro beats with outspoken lyrics like "I'm going my way today, leave me alone in my way / I'm happy even I'm by myself / Proudly going my way, gonna be a good day / No need to walk on eggshells today."
Urban pop track Sorry (Track 2), their final comeback song in Queendom, is included in the album as well.
Jimin's unique rap tone and Chan Mi's voice in the pre-chorus parts make the uptempo dance track "Magic Spell" (Track 3) sound extra mysterious, yet cheery and attractive. The group also try out "newtro" sounds for the first time in their disco pop number Ninety Nine (Track 4). The mix of their voices and the melody offer a natural feeling of allure.
After years of being underestimated, AOA can finally shine with their own colors and versatility instead of just "sexy concepts." Though they didn’t come first in Queendom, the show was certainly a turning point in their career that allowed them to try something different from what they've done for years. New Moon marks the beginning of a new chapter for the five girls in AOA!
