Though Produce 101
is controversial in so many ways, it's undeniable that the show has been a great platform for trainees to shine with their talents. Hip-hop label Brand New Music is a typical example – their trainees from Produce 101 Season 2
and the recent Produce X 101
all received lots of love for their skills and performances.
Much like the BNM trainees from Season 2, Kim Si Hun, Yun Jung Hwan, Hong Seong Jun and Lee Eun Sang impressed audiences with their self-composed track Go Get Her during their first evaluation on Produce X 101. After three months, Si Hun, Jung Hwan and Seong Jun finished the competition at ranks #27, #38 and #51, respectively. With Eun Sang making it to the final debut lineup of X1, the rest of the "Brand New Boys" debut as the project unit BDC with the special single album Boys Da Capo!
Brand New Music artists debuting with a pop R&B track? That's unexpected! Most fans probably assumed they would go for a funkier hip-hop-style dance track, but surprisingly, they do really well in this genre too. "Remember Me" (Track 1) starts with a soothing piano melody that gradually blends into a synth-driven tune in the chorus. The song conveys the hope that audiences will remember them as the brightest stars: "Wish that I'm not just one of those countless memories in your heart / Remember me as the brightest shining person at the moment." Jung Hwan's high notes, Si Hun's rapping and singing, Seong Jun's unique tone – the song perfectly shows the characteristics of all three members.
This single album marks the beginning of a new journey for the boys. Just like "Da Capo" (Track 2), the repeat sign in music pieces, the boys are back to the starting line as rookies to show the world what they've got. "Da Capo" is a heartfelt, healing ballad that comforts and encourages us to not to be afraid of making a fresh start again.
Through Boys Da Capo, Si Hun, Jung Hwan and Seong Jun prove their singing talents in music genres that they rarely performed before. It's totally a notable, brand new start for them.
