Ten years of Code Blue

As someone who's followed the Code Blue series since the start, the movie was pretty much a must-watch for me. Apparently I wasn't alone as Code Blue: The Movie was the biggest Japanese film of 2018.

Code Blue started on Fuji TV in 2008 with Yamashita Tomohisa, Aragaki Yui, Toda Erika and Asari Yosuke playing flight doctors-in-training and Higa Manami playing a nurse for a hospital's helicopter dispatch emergency medical team. The hit medical series was followed by an equally popular second season in 2010, and then finally returned for a third season in 2017. The 2018 movie picks up from the third season with the original protagonists continuing to deal with career and life decisions while holding down the ER fort. Meanwhile, Season 3's new joiners Arioka Daiki, Narita Ryo, Araki Yuko and Baba Fumika continue to learn the ropes and figure out what the medical profession means to them.

As common for Japanese films based on TV series, Code Blue: The Movie is basically an expensive TV SP, but on the big screen. Anyone who's watched the series knows what's coming in the movie as it sticks with the same formula. There are constant emergencies, daily hospital happenings, human stories with patients, family and relationship drama among the medical staff, and large-scale disasters that put one or more of the main protagonists in danger - all in one movie! Of course, there's also those small moments between the doctors of awkward elevator talk and heartfelt conversations. Nothing out of expectation happens, but that doesn't stop my heart from swelling with feels as soon as I hear the familiar notes of the instrumental theme song and Mr. Children's Hanabi.

Much like the third season, the movie is a bit bittersweet as 2008's rookie doctors are now the veterans in 2018 facing career and family changes that will take them in different directions. The protagonists have surely grown up with the audience over a decade's time. The personal and professional decisions they face at this point in their lives feel believable, as does the close camaderie yet appropriate distance they've maintained over the years.

The Code Blue series' high ratings and enduring popularity over ten years assures it a spot in Heisei nostalgia. I hope that we will be able to revisit the doctors of Code Blue again in the Reiwa era.
