April, flower and Chen

When thinking about Chen, people tend to connect him with words like "warm," "sweet" and "healing." On top of his cute look, he possesses a lovable personality and tender voice that gives everyone a comforting feeling. After a seven-year wait, the EXO member finally gets the chance to show his vocals thoroughly with a solo album!

Like the majority of K-ballads, the six love stories in April, and a flower mainly revolve around relationships, breakup and memories. Title song "Beautiful goodbye" (Track 2) does not have a grand or complex tune but a simple acoustic melody that best delivers Chen's refined voice. Contrary to the heart-wrenching lead single, the singer's self-written track "Flower" (Track 1) shares warmth and hope. We hurt sometimes, but love and hope will always come to us again – just like how wilted flowers bloom again when spring arrives.

Written by rising singer-songwriter Paul Kim, the melancholic "Sorry not sorry" (Track 3) is my favorite from this album. A Paul Kim and Chen collaboration. What more could we ask for? In fact, the English song title confused me at first because the track ends with these lyrics: "Actually, I want to say, I'm sorry." But aside from that, "Sorry not sorry" is perfect in regards to Chen's voice, the mood and the ambience.

The Kenzie-produced "Love words" (Track 4) begins with a soothing intro, and then gradually proceeds to a stronger beat that stirs the listener's feelings. Different from the other soft ballads, this pop ballad is literally more "powerful" in terms of Chen's voice and the outpouring emotions. I personally really love the piano instrumental of "Portrait of you" (Track 6), which is penned by Andreas Stone Johansson who has worked with numerous Asian artists, including EXO for "Miracles in December."

As a "ballad addict," I can proudly say I love every single song from Chen's first solo release. Though the album doesn't offer any surprises, it suits him best for his solo debut. His soulful voice and the melodies are all very on point, as always. Hopefully Chen, plus the other EXO members, will have more chance to showcase their vocal talents!
