ITZY - IT'z ME (Random Version)
The new wannabe icons
April 1, 2020 Picked By Violet See all this editor's picks
After singing "I'm Dalla Dalla" and "I see that I'm icy," ITZY proudly sings "I just wanna be me!" and hits the world with the ambitious resounding hit Wannabe. As expected, the JYP group has dropped another well-loved album, IT'z Me, that cannot be overlooked.

"I don't wanna be somebody, just wanna be me, be me!" Following their debut hit, producing team GALACTIKA* again brings ITZY a bop with Wannabe (Track 1). With a touch of rock influence and electric guitar sounds, the groovy fusion number gives the girls a chance to spark their teen crush energy and stand out among other groups. Though Ryu Jin's rap in the first verse is likely a hit or miss, it doesn't affect the quality of this self-love anthem. It's so catchy that you just can't resist dancing and singing along to it! From Dalla Dalla to Wannabe, ITZY's musical and fashion styles have been pretty obvious and consistent, making their whole group concept very recognizable.

As mentioned before, IT'z ME is a highly ambitious release from the group. It deliberately features B-sides that are as good and addictive as the title single, not to mention the strong songwriter lineup behind every composition. I personally really like Nobody Like You (Track 4) because the pop rock plug gives off a young and energetic vibe – as if the girls are in a chick flick. That's a No No (Track 3) has an addictive Latin-style melody with synth-based rhythms, Moombahton beats, percussion elements and bold and memorable lyrics ¬– "Can't let you kill my vibe, that's a no no!"

ITZY continues to go their own way in the house/Moombahton mix-genre jam I Don't Wanna Dance (Track 6), which is composed by Anne Judith Wik and Nermin Harambasic, who both took part in Girls' Generation's Genie. The edgy and empowering You Make Me (Track 5) says to not be blinded by love and to not afraid of being yourself while in love. The song's lyrics are aggressive, outspoken and straightforward: "Jealousy is what only childish kids do / Believe in myself and filter them out coolly, no mercy / It doesn't matter if you want to make me jealous / I'll just giggle chicly and leave it."

Besides well-known Korean songwriters like earattack (You Make Me) and collapsdone (Nobody Like You), IT'z ME also features international producers, including Oliver Heldens for the funky disco house trap music Ting Ting Ting (Track 2) and SOPHIE for the upbeat and playful 24HRS (Track 7).

When it comes to JYP girl groups, they never disappoint. As a rookie group, ITZY has successfully constructed their signature chic, powerful and confident image and ITZY-style music with three consecutive hits about self-empowerment and the funky side tracks in IT'z ME. I'm now curious to see how the girls would perform soft and soothing music genres like ballad and R&B.
