How would you describe your youth? The brightest days of your life, or the most painful and rebellious time you've ever had? "Youth" is for sure one of the most popular themes in Korean music, but indie band Jannabi has a rather different interpretation of the word.
Jannabi leader and lyricist Jung Hoon describes their new album LEGEND as such: "It revolves around youth, a miserable time that eventually disappears someday and becomes a legend in our lives." Rather than just chattering about romance, the band talks about this and that, the tiny happenings of their youthful days.
Jannabi is best known for the tracks "Summer," She, Good Boy Twist and recent hit "Take My Hand" from Romance is a Bonus Book. Their calm and dulcet vintage music is certainly a key to their success; on top of that, their well-written lyrics make them an even more attractive band.
"For Lovers Who Hesitate" (Track 8), the title track of LEGEND, has received much love from listeners, and it reached the top 10 on most Korean music charts. As Jung Hoon puts it, people treat a relationship like it's forever, even though we all know it might end someday. For lovers who hesitate, the pop ballad describes this complicated feeling and gives the strength to embark on another love journey.
LEGEND starts with the lullaby "Good Good Night (Intro)" (Track 1), which searches for peace of mind with a soothing tune. The rhythmic and joyous plug "Together!" (Track 2) depicts a wait that seems really long, and also serves as a "fan song" for those who have been waiting for their comeback. They also pray to be forever "Joyful Joyful" (Track 3) about the simplest things – waking up in the morning, joking about hopes, following where the sun goes down.
Jung Hoon unveils how love and rock n' roll saved his life in the high-spirited "LEGEND" (Track 7), which harks back to the album title and meaning. Having a relaxing and cheery melody, "About a Boy" (Track 5) is inspired by a conversation Jung Hoon overheard when he was young. Now a grown-up, he wonders if there is anyone that can always stay by his side as much as his mother.
Besides the above, the album also carries tracks with unique topics – talking to his own reflection in Mirror (Track 4), wishing to turn back time to live in his hometown of Dolmaro (Track 6), beating insomnia with the folk Geum Ui Hwan Hyang (Track 9). The lyricist also dedicates "Dreams, Books, Power and Walls" (Track 12), a song about growing up and growing old, to his father, friends and himself.
Beyond retro peaceful melodies, Jannabi also brings interesting and unique lyrics that calm minds and heal hearts. Listening to this album makes me feel like I'm watching the drama Reply 1988. Relive your youthful moments and memories in the vintage band sounds of LEGEND!
