About a year ago, I wrote my first Editor's Pick of 2019 on ONEUS's debut album Light Us
, which had the exceptionally good but very underrated title song Valkyrie
. Since then, I've listened to all their releases, and I can boldly say that ONEUS was one of the rookies with the best music production in 2019. As expected from RBW, ONEUS continues to bless us with good music this year.
Having wrapped up their "Us" trilogy, ONEUS hints about their upcoming series in the prelude In Its Time. After exploring dark concepts in their first three albums, the boys go for a slightly laid-back and less intense atmosphere in their first single album. Refreshing and rhythmic, "A Song Written Easily" offers chill vibes (rarely seen from them) without sacrificing their own colors. Lee Do's rapping is powerful as usual, but his rap talent doesn't limit him as a singer – his singing totally wows me! His deep, throaty tone, especially at 2:48, gives the song a sense of melancholy and mystery. As Seo Ho is on hiatus, Lee Do is now also responsible for singing the main vocalist's lines on live shows. From the whistles, addictive melody and Moombahton beats to the members' unique voices, "A Song Written Easily" is honestly one of the best jams of 2020 so far.
Though this single album has only two songs, that doesn't diminish the effort that was put in and the quality that came out. Rather upbeat and catchy, the funky synth-pop side track "Hide and Seek" is also a very title-track-worthy song. But of course, the subtly bluesy and mysterious aura in "A Song Written Easily" indeed makes it a better and stronger title single than "Hide and Seek." The two songs in In Its Time show the group's possibilities to pursue different styles and concepts.
Almost a year and a half after debut, ONEUS is about to begin another journey on Road to Kingdom. Hopefully it will become a significant turning point for their career!
