Though Cube Entertainment is often criticized for their management skills, the label certainly has the ability to train and debut many musically talented singers. Pentagon proves this again with their six-track mini-album Genie:us
Dance off your stress on Saturdays with Pentagon's future house track "SHA LA LA" (Track 1)! The song is titled Shintoburi in Korean, which is originally a Buddhist term, but the band has humorously changed its meaning to an abbreviation of "Happy Saturday Night." This plug has an unexpectedly different vibe from their previous two hits, but it's still an addictive one! The song intro particularly reminds me of Wanna One's Energetic, which is also written by Hui. Witty as always, lyricists Hui and Woo Seok mention their hit "Shine" in "SHA LA LA" as well: "I am not the loser I was yesterday. I will shine today. I'm better now."
Last year, Pentagon's "Shine" climbed back to the top of Korean music charts during springtime. Amazed by the miracle, Kino records this precious memory in the alternative rock song "Spring Snow" (Track 5), which is my favorite from Genie:us. All Pentagon members participated in writing and composing the funky upbeat bonus track Round 1 (Track 6). They show their strong friendship through the amusing "disses" and "fights" in the lyrics.
Much to my surprise, main vocalist Hui took part in the hip-hop unit track Lost Paradise along with Yuto, Kino and Woo Seok. The members wonder where the kid who used to genuinely pursue dreams is. They encourage themselves to not take mind of criticism or failures in Lost Paradise.
Jin Ho, Hong Seok, Shin Won, Yeo One and Yan An sing the ballad unit song "Till…" (Track 3) produced by Hui. This is exactly the song to exhibit Jin Ho's angelic yet powerful voice. I especially like the lyrics: "I'm better than yesterday. Not afraid, we will follow the light. Don’t give up until that moment, don't shed tears until that moment. Not afraid as long as we are together."
Listening to the six fun, melodious and funky tracks in Pentagon's Genie:us carries is the best way to relieve stress. Aside from their title songs, they also release great side tracks that may exceed your expectations!
