Karen Mok (Singer)
Two decades after Golden Flower, C-pop diva Karen Mok finally presents her new Cantonese album – The Voyage – to record her remarkable stories and emotions throughout her 28-year-long music journey.
Last year, Karen swept charts and awards with the hit Cantonese digital single "Breathing is Hazardous," for which a rooftop live version is included in this album. She brings new modern woman insights in the 2021 version of "A Woman for All Seasons," which is again written by Wyman Wong. After 21 years, women still long for love, but they're also much more confident and independent now: "Even if you can't meet the right person, you're still a good woman. Doggedly go shop, eat, and sleep." She gently shows off her ethereal voice and high notes in the ballad "To Shed a Tear for You," and encourages us to keep our chin up in "Anything is Possible" composed by Cath Wong.
Apart from new songs, Karen brings rearranged, live-recorded renditions of some of her old hits. She gives a jazzy, bossa-nova take of The Way You Make Me Feel (Track 3), and illustrates a pure, genuine "First Love" (Track 4) in an acoustic tune. She collaborates with Edward Chan and Cousin Fung for the dreamy, romantic "Fill Me With Your Love," while her classic love song "Aurora Borealis" is turned into a Chinese orchestral piece. Her mature voice, accompanied by live band sounds, perfectly brings out the different vibes of these classic hits.
Through the eight songs in The Voyage, Karen sings about the different shapes of love with her mature and delicately soothing vocals that easily evoke memories of our own. Her never-ending journey of love continues.
