It's only March but do you realize that nine K-pop groups have already debuted so far in 2019! A number of strong and talented teams have made their first step to stardom this year, and it's no wonder that everybody's crazily jamming to ITZY's Dalla Dalla
, TXT's "Crown" and VERIVERY's "Ring Ring Ring." Among all the debut releases in the first quarter of the year, my personal favorite is TREI's first mini-album Born
, especially their lead single "Gravity"!
You might notice some familiar faces in TREI as members Jae Jun and Chang Hyun promoted with C-Clown a few years ago and took part in MIXNINE. Along with new member Jun Tae, TREI officially debuted in late February with their first five-track album. Like their company "sunbae" EXID, the members are capable of music composition and production. One interesting fact about the album is that all five tracks have three- character titles that relate to their band name. Shinsadong Tiger works as the main producer for the whole release.
"Gravity" (Track 1) is undoubtedly my favorite from this album. The song may not sound "trendy" but it's very catchy and nostalgic in a way that reminds me of the old K-pop days. "Gravity" carries a funky pop dance rhythm and a melancholic, sentimental ambience. Jun Tae leads off the intro part with his quality vocals; his falsetto truly gives me goosebumps.
Disco funk song "Lady" (Track 2) reels you in with a chain of addictive "ah-ah-ah-ahgassi" hooks and beats. Chang Hyun not only composed the song but also performed and recorded the guitar and the synthesizer. As for "Turn the Light" (Track 3), though it has a powerful trap beat sound, it's actually a sweet "healing song" that tells people not to worry and to lean on them.
"Lonely Night" (Track 5) is composed by Chang Hyun and co-written by Jae Jun. Mainly accompanied by guitar riffs, "Lonely Night" has a simple melody with impressive background vocals and harmonies sung by the TREI members.
Born gives a taste of the K-pop music that I grew up with. TREI members aren't just talented as performers but also as composers and producers. While this is merely the start for TREI, I'm pretty sure they're going to have a bright future with their talents and potential!
