SM Entertainment's ambitious project NCT debuted their first non-local subunit, WayV, earlier this year to break into the C-pop music scene. After taking off in their first mini-album, WayV aspires to Take Over The Moon
in their sophomore release!
Starting off with some piano notes and humming, "Moonwalk" (Track 1) guides you to a mysterious – and somewhat magical – ambience of sounds with profound lyrics that express their worldview of a limitless dream and future in line with NCT's. Following almost three minutes of trap beats, the melody returns to the peculiar sounds from the beginning of the song in the final bridge part, which genuinely makes the composition and production more notable. The distinctive melody of "Moonwalk" is co-composed by Adrian McKinnon and Tay Jasper, who also composed SuperM's Jopping. Listen for main vocalist Xiaojun's impressively powerful high notes at 3:09 in his sweet and mellow tone!
If "Moonwalk" is the song that best represents WayV's concept and artistry, "Love Talk" (Track 3) is the icing on the cake that broadens the group's musicality. Produced and co-composed by LDN Noise, "Love Talk" depicts a love that cannot be held back by language barriers. The falsettos in the rhythmical chorus parts make the R&B sound more addictive, and give the song an overwhelmingly desperate feeling. There's also an English version of "Love Talk" that you can listen to on music streaming platforms.
Besides singing and rapping, Hendery and Yangyang also reveal their songwriting talent for the first time in the mid-tempo R&B hip-hop unit track "King of Hearts" (Track 4) with Winwin and Lucas. Vocalist members Kun, Ten and Xiaojun perform the ballad "Face to Face" (Track 5), which is written by famous lyricist Xiaohan who also penned Dream Launch from their previous album.
Go nanana with WayV in their catchy teen pop anthem "We go nanana" (Track 6)! Produced by songwriter-producer Erik Lidbom (AOA's Excuse Me), the funky and uplifting tune is a confession song with heart-fluttering lines that also happen to connect with their group concept: "Forever dream come true, envision our future / We na-na-na-na-na-na-na / You're worth waiting for/ Because happiness exists only when you're here." Hendery and Yangyang deliver sweet love messages to WayZenNis through their rap lyrics. "Yeah Yeah Yeah" (Track 2) is a trendy hip-hop trap number with a strong atmosphere and repeating hooks that showcase the members' passion for music and stage performances.
Take Over The Moon shows WayV's ambition for music and the stage while also emphasizing the entire NCT group concept. Plus, Winwin and Hendery finally get to sing and rap more parts (which they totally deserve).
