Much ado about something

With a strange and straightforward title like When I Get Home, My Wife Always Pretends to Be Dead, it's hard to not take notice of Toshio Lee's comedy-drama. I'm happy to report that the title is absolutely representative of the film's content.

Yasuda Ken plays typical salaryman Jun who is suddenly faced with an atypical conundrum: his wife (Eikura Nana) of three years keeps pretending to be dead. When he comes home from work, he's greeted with ridiculous props and fake death scenarios. Chie surprises him with her latest creative death, and then nonchalantly serves dinner. After the initial shock, Jun tries to play along and support his wife through whatever mysterious tough patch she must be going through. However, he feels increasingly lost and frustrated as he struggles to understand her and the state of their marriage.

Chie's various fake death scenarios, like death by crocodile, are funny and unexpected, and bring a constant element of surprise and anticipation to the film. Beneath the oddball humor though is a genuinely thoughtful story about a married couple reassessing and reaffirming their time together and what comes next. What does three years of marriage mean for Jun who is on his second marriage, and for Chie who is trying to express her feelings in her own way?

Such an elaborate setup for a simple story may seem like much ado about nothing, but it's the many small moments of everyday life that make a marriage work in the long run. This laid-back and charming relationship drama is actually based on a Yahoo! Japan Answers post in which the husband asked for advice about his wife's odd behavior and provided updates. The unique story with a resonant message went viral and inspired various retellings, including this warm, whimsical and unassuming film.
