The below rankings are based on sales of television releases on YesAsia.com US Site from January 1 to December 31, 2013. Sales of all editions and versions of the same title are summed up to determine the total sales and ranking of each title.
With its longstanding audience base and English-subtitled DVD releases, TVB series were still the top-selling choice for Chinese dramas. Thirty years have gone by and
Legend of Condor Heroes, the martial arts drama starring
Felix Wong as the kindhearted swordsman and the late
Barbara Yung as the witty heroine, remained the fan favorite regardless of time. Crime thriller
Witness Insecurity, featuring three-time screen couple
Bosco Wong and
Linda Chung, ranked highest among new dramas thanks to its many unforgettable moments, romantic scenes and even a popular theme song that has become one of Linda's signature pieces.
Thanks to critical acclaim from the film festival circuit and the availability of an English-subtitled DVD,
Kurosawa Kiyoshi's mini-series
Penance was by far the top Japanese TV seller in 2013.
Itazura na Kiss proves that a good story is worth retelling as its new television drama adaptation in Japan was a hit with fans. The power of
Arashi could also be felt on television as the group's 2006 variety show
CxDxG no Arashi remained a bestseller almost seven years after its release.
Period fantasies
Arang and the Magistrate and
Gu Family Book led the way for K-Dramas in 2013, and
Lee Seung Gi's 2012 series
The King 2 Hearts also made the list. The based-on-manga school drama
For You in Full Blossom clocked in third on the power of its idol cast, while its cross-dressing predecessor
Coffee Prince remained popular as ever. Romantic melodramas still have a home in the hearts of K-Drama fans as can be seen with
Will It Snow For Christmas? and
I Miss You, which makes it two dramas in the top ten for
Yoon Eun Hye.
Note: Rankings for best-selling TV dramas differ between YesAsia's US and Global Sites due to the different product selections available on each site based on regional licensing restrictions. Korean and Chinese TV drama rankings in this feature reflect the sales on US Site only. Related Articles:
