The below rankings are based on sales of movie releases on YesAsia.com from January 1 to December 31, 2014. Sales of all editions and versions of the same title are summed up to determine the total sales and ranking of each title.
2014 was undoubtedly the year of
Donnie Yen. The martial artist/actor starred in three of our top ten, including the top overall film,
The Monkey King. Police action dramas starring big-name actors like
Andy Lau,
Louis Koo,
Nick Cheung,
Lau Ching Wan and
Jackie Chan remain popular with worldwide audiences, while singer-turned-director
Juno Mak's cult-horror-that-could makes an impressive showing. The list is rounded out by big-budget fantasy epic
The Four II and
From Vegas to Macau,
Wong Jing and
Chow Yun Fat's revival of the gambling comedy.
Animation was still king in 2014, taking five out of the top ten spots. As always, Studio Ghibli proves to be particularly popular among movie fans, with
Miyazaki Hayao's swan song
The Wind Rises topping the bestsellers and three other Ghibli titles entering the chart. It was also a good movie year for Arashi members, as
Matsumoto Jun's
Girl in the Sunny Place and
Sakurai Sho's
After-Dinner Mysteries managed to crack the top ten.
2014 was apparently a good year for movies about (devastatingly handsome) North Korean agents fighting for their lives in South Korea. Spy actioner
Secretly, Greatly starring
Kim Soo Hyun topped our Korean movie bestsellers, and
T.O.P's
Commitment and
Gong Yoo's
The Suspect also made the list. Bolstered by the popularity of its idol cast, youth swimming film
No Breathing surprisingly surpassed more high-profile blockbusters like
The Face Reader,
Hwayi: A Monster Boy,
Obsessed and
Miss Granny to take second place. Meanwhile, the 2012 erotic period drama
The Concubine sneaked into the top ten on the back of strong sales for its Blu-ray release.
