Besides tearing through the box office to become the second biggest Japanese film of all time, Shinkai Makoto's beloved animated blockbuster Your Name is also our best-selling movie of 2017. Anno Hideaki's critically and commercially lauded Godzilla reboot comes in second. As always, manga adaptations and franchise extensions are popular with I Am A Hero, A Silent Voice and the new Death Note making the top ten. BEST-SELLING CHINESE MOVIES
In a year without a Donnie Yen-starring Chinese film release, Derek Yee's Shaw Brothers homage Sword Master somewhat surprisingly comes out on top, despite not having one of the conventional big-name movie stars. Andy Lau's crime actioner Shock Wave and the Wong Kar Wai-produced star-powered comedy-drama See You Tomorrow follow closely behind. Besides the usual period and action films, indie director Scud's provocative queer film Utopians charts high at #4, and nineties classic Comrades, Almost a Love Story makes a return thanks to its long-awaited remastered Blu-ray. Eddie Peng and Louis Koo's prolific production give them each two films in the top ten.1. Sword Master | 2. Shock Wave | 3. See You Tomorrow | 4. Utopians | 5. Comrades, Almost a Love Story |
6. Operation Mekong | 7. Journey To The West: The Demons Strike Back | 8. Call of Heroes | 9. League of Gods | 10. Cook Up a Storm |
BEST-SELLING KOREAN MOVIES
Released on video in December 2016, zombie sensation Train to Busan squeezed into tenth place on the 2016 Korean bestsellers chart. For 2017, it's the unrivalled #1 among Korean films and second overall. Park Chan Wook's erotic blockbuster The Handmaiden also ranks high for the second consecutive year. Crime and action thrillers featuring popular actors, like Kim Jee Woon's The Age of Shadows and the Hyun Bin-starring Confidential Assignment, occupy half the chart, but there's also room for other genres such as the one-man disaster drama Tunnel, the historical biopic Last Princess and the family sports film My Annoying Brother starring EXO's D.O.1. Train to Busan | 2. Handmaiden | 3. Age of Shadows | 4 (tie). Confidential Assignment | 4 (tie). Fabricated City |
6. Tunnel | 7. My Annoying Brother | 8. Last Princess | 9. Master | 10. Vanishing Time: A Boy Who Returned |
