BEST-SELLING CHINESE MOVIES

At the half-year mark, Lost in the Fumes was ranked third. By the end of 2019, the documentary about jailed Hong Kong activist Edward Leung had emphatically climbed to the top of the movie bestsellers, garnering over two times the sales of Master Z: The Ip Man Legacy in second place. The rest of the top ten is more predictably occupied by Zhang Yimou's wuxia masterpiece Shadow and crime action entries starring familiar Hong Kong names, such as Hong Kong Film Awards winner Project Gutenberg with Chow Yun Fat, Donnie Yen's Big Brother, Young & Dangerous reunion fest Golden Job, and two Storm-titled films with Louis Koo.

BEST-SELLING KOREAN MOVIES

My Sassy Girl's holy-grail English-subtitled Blu-ray finally arrived in 2019, and it unsurprisingly beat out all the new Korean films. It's also the only Korean entry to make it into the overall top ten. Epic fantasy thriller Along with The Gods nabs two spots, with The Two Worlds keeping its same position as last year. Fantasy melodrama Be With You also stays on the chart, rising from #9 in 2018 to #6. Violent suspense thriller The Witch Part 1: The Subversion roars into the top three past bigger-name films like The Spy Gone North and 1987: When the Day Comes.

BEST-SELLING JAPANESE MOVIES

The Travelling Cat Chronicles, a touching and aesthetically pleasing story that breezes through the blockbuster checklist of tearjerker, pretty people, pretty places and cat, is the best-selling Japanese film of 2019. This means it edged out zombies (sleeper hit One Cut for the Dead), multiple movies starring Johnny's top idols (Killing for the Prosecution, Laplace's Witch, Code Blue), and two Oscar-nominated works (Kore-eda Hirokazu's Palme d'Or winner Shoplifters and Hosoda Mamoru's animated fantasy Mirai). Why? Because cats rule the internet.
