The below rankings are based on sales of movie releases on YesAsia.com from January 1 to December 31, 2020.
Not even
Parasite can beat
Donnie Yen – only Donnie Yen can. The action legend's
Ip Man series finale narrowly edged out his action comedy
Enter the Fat Dragon to become our best-selling film of 2020.
Sammi Cheng's sisterhood drama
Fagara, Taiwan horror
Detention and the 4K restored Blu-ray of
Hou Hsiao Hsien's
Flowers of Shanghai round out the top five Chinese-language films. Hong Kong crime dramas with usual suspects
Louis Koo and
Nick Cheung claim four spots, and
Ching Siu Tung's period fantasy
Jade Dynasty makes the top-ten cut thanks to the fan-support boost for lead actor
Xiao Zhan.
As expected,
Bong Joon Ho's Oscar-winning
Parasite was the top-selling Korean film of 2020.
Yoona and
Jo Jung Suk's disaster action comedy
EXIT and the all-star disaster action thriller
Ashfall follow in second and third place. Two of
Crash Landing on You star
Hyun Bin's films – 2018's
The Negotiation and 2017's
Confidential Assignment – return to the top sellers. Blockbuster police comedy
Extreme Job and
Lee Young Ae's silver-screen comeback
Bring Me Home are also in the top ten, along with the award-winning films
Kim Ji Young, Born 1982 and
The Man Standing Next.
Shinkai Makoto's animated fantasy
Weathering With You easily came in first among Japanese films, and his previous blockbuster
Your Name continued to chart high. Two other anime classics appear in the top ten:
Akira got shiny new Blu-ray releases, and
Evangelion 1.11 is likely because of anticipation for the final
Rebuild of Evangelion entry. In a year when we all needed some miso soup for the soul, the two
Midnight Diner films quietly came in second and third ahead of the
Kimura Takuya-led Higashino Keigo adaptation
Masquerade Hotel,
Ninagawa Mika's Dazai Osamu biopic
No Longer Human and the latest
Sadako horror.
