The below rankings are based on sales of movie releases on YesAsia.com from January 1 to December 31, 2021.
Andy Lau is king with three films in our top ten bestsellers! The evergreen superstar's crime thriller
Shock Wave 2 was our #1 film of 2021, and its 2017 predecessor also returned to the top ten right behind Andy's inspirational drama
Find Your Voice.
Guan Hu's blockbuster war epic
The Eight Hundred and
Zhang Yimou's spy thriller
Cliff Walkers ranked high as expected as our second and third biggest Chinese films.
Fatal Visit entered the top five on the power of stars
Sammi Cheng and
Charlene Choi, while
Raging Fire,
Benny Chan's last film starring
Donnie Yen and
Nicholas Tse, made the top ten cut even though it was released fairly late in the year. Classic Hong Kong films are always steady sellers, and
John Woo's
A Better Tomorrow actually came in eighth in 2021. It's not all action and genre though, thanks to award-winning Taiwan dramas
Dear Tenant and
My Missing Valentine.
Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba the Movie: Mugen Train slayed the box office to become Japan's biggest film of all time, so it's no surprise that it was also our best-selling Japanese film of 2021. Eternal favorite Doraemon claimed three spots with the 3D
Stand By Me Doraemon series and its annual 2D entry. With the fourth and final film of the
Rebuild of Evangelion series coming out theatrically this year, all three previous entries made it into our top ten.
Shinkai Makoto's
Weathering with You and
Your Name also continued to sell well, leaving
Iwai Shunji's
Last Letter as the only live-action film in the top ten.
Hong Won Chan's brutal action thriller
Deliver Us From Evil starring
Lee Jung Jae and
Hwang Jung Min was the top-selling Korean film of 2021. It's followed by the sci-fi actioner
Seobok starring
Gong Yoo and
Park Bo Gum. Two
Kang Dong Won-led futuristic dystopian action thrillers –
Kim Jee Woon's
Jin-Roh remake
Illang and
Train to Busan sequel
Peninsula – appear in the top ten.
Voice of Silence, featuring
Yoo Ah In in an award-winning performance, came in fifth, and
Ryoo Seung Wan's
Escape from Mogadishu closed out the top ten. Four films that ranked in the top ten in 2020 stayed on the chart:
Parasite,
Extreme Job,
The Negotiation and
EXIT.
