In 2022,
Snow Man was not only the top-selling artist in Japan, but also YesAsia's top-selling artist in Japanese music. The Johnny's group took the title for the first time, sending two albums, five singles and two concert releases onto the bestseller charts along the way. With K-pop groups usually commanding higher sales, Snow Man is actually the first Japanese artist not named
Arashi to be our top seller in Japanese music in over a decade!
Besides Snow Man, other Johnny's groups like KinKi Kids, KAT-TUN, Hey! Say! JUMP, Naniwa Danshi and SixTONES maintained their presence on the chart, taking all ten spots in singles. For the second straight year, Utada Hikaru had the top-selling Japanese album by a Japanese artist. HYBE JAPAN's new group &TEAM made a strong debut to join the likes of Perfume, ONE OK ROCK and Dir En Grey on the album chart.
Red Velvet's Bloom was the highest-selling Japanese album of 2022, and the SM group was also the second highest-selling artist overall. Korean girl groups made a strong showing with Loona, ITZY, STAYC, Kep1er and IVE on the singles chart, and Twice claiming two albums in the top ten. Stray Kids and ATEEZ also continued to do well with new albums in the top five, and their 2021 singles staying in the top ten. SHINee member Onew was the only solo Korean singer on the charts, and he ranked #5 in total sales just on the strength of one album and one concert release.
The below rankings are based on sales of Japan Version music releases on YesAsia.com from January 1 to December 31, 2022. EP releases are categorized as albums.
