How did they screw this up so badly?!? Customer Review Rated Bad 4 - 4 out of 10
Andy Lau and Cherie Chung in a film directed by Ann Hui? Wow! Sounds like a recipe for a terrific movie, right? Wrong. "Zodiac Killers" is an amateurish mess. Andy Lau plays a hot-headed Hong Kong film student studying at a film school in Japan, but missing most of his classes in order to work odd jobs, like leading a Chinese tour group on visits to Tokyo's seamy side. Cherie Chung plays a mainland Chinese language student working nights as a bargirl and dating Japan's only sweet-tempered yakuza hitman. Andy is smitten when he meets Cherie; Cherie has eyes only for her yakuza.

The movie offers no hint of a story until it reaches the fifty minute mark, when Cherie's gangster boyfriend, after being attacked by other yakuza thugs and before he bleeds to death, gives Cherie a tape to deliver to one of his cronies. The film then evolves into a forty minute long chase sequence in which Cherie and Andy flee for their lives from yakuza who want to grab that tape. The chase provides some visceral thrills, but by the time it arrives the viewer has lost interest.

I don't think Andy Lau ever developed much of a feel for his character; he doesn't project much other than anger. Cherie Chung wanders through the movie looking bewildered, probably wondering why she got roped into doing this stinker for her penultimate film role. It is mystifying how an experienced and skilled filmmaker like Ann Hui could create such a bomb. Perhaps working in the foreign environment of Japan presented unexpected challenges. Whatever the reason, "Zodiac Killers" is one to miss.
